Black Dragon Is Dead

Black Dragon Auto died. They were kinda pricey but had a ton of stock parts. Is there any other source similar to them where I can get new parts for the FB?

I wish I would have bought stuff BEFORE then. I'm still kicking myself on not buying window seals from them, even though you can still find them elsewhere.

RockAuto still stocks a ton of stuff for the 1st gen, but not the little stuff like clips and emblems. For that you can try Atkins and Mazdatrix.

Of course there's still a crapload of parts cars out there too.

Parts cars are where? We have nothing around here. Yards are empty. Not saying they don't exist, but it is not like it once was.

You just gotta ask around for what you're looking for. Someone has it.

Black Dragon mostly just sold the same parts any Mazda dealership can get, but at inflated prices. The only difference is that Black Dragon had the good commercial sense and acumen to stick the parts in a nice catalogue that made it easier to identify and order parts. Notice how they changed the part numbers so that you couldn't go price check from your local Mazda dealer. As soon as they faced competition from online sellers and 1st gen parts started drying up from Mazda, no doubt this made the business much less profitable.

Yes Black Dragon sold some nice aftermarket stuff too, but pretty much all of that is available elsewhere cheaper as well.

So there really is no great loss.

Mazdatrix and Atkins continue to offer much the same service, but didn't go to the same lengths to obscure the Mazda part numbers. But they are usually more expensive than the parts department at Mazda Dealerships as well. The great thing I will say about Atkins however is they have some items in stock which are NLA from Mazda.

Good luck finding any OEM or aftermarket fenders. Litterlay spent an entire summer hunting a driver side fender! And it had damage ( easily fixed with bondo, my stock fender got smashed in)

You can get ancient parts from the dealer? One dealer parts tech said that they don't carry anything over 5 years, one sold me a leaky clutch master cylinder, another tried to sell me a $20 nut for the cat converter, another sold me the wrong plugs. What's more a neighbor said he sued them and lost for doing the same thing so it is like the dealer didn't know better.

Where I am, my parts dealers can get in anything if you supply the part number. If it's not in Australia, they can order from Japan. They have fairly uniform pricing as well.

I have also purchased parts from US based Mazda dealers who have online parts services and they have always helped me. Not all ship internationally, but all of them ship domestically. I have made enquiries on 1st gen parts from Tasca Parts, Jim Ellis, *** Mazda, Zoom Zoom Parts, Elite Mazda in Canada and that's just off the top of my head. All of them carry these parts. They have reasonably uniform pricing, but some discount more than others...the basic list price was almost always cheaper than Black Dragon.

If a part is no longer available, it's almost always because it's not longer available from Japan, meaning no one can get the part. The only reason an Atkins or Black Dragon might have had it is if they had NOS on hand. But the stuff in the last Black Dragon catalogue is all still available from Mazda as "new new stock" (as opposed to "new old stock").

You need to find the right MAZDA dealer that knows how to find the old part numbers and get the parts. Newer dealers don't know crap about anything past their birthdate. KYPREO nailed it with his post. Follow up on some of those names and see what they have.

Black Dragon sold OEM and non-OEM parts. It just didn't list which was which, so when you bought, say, a thermostat you were liable to not know which you were getting. Atkins and Mazdatrix are very good to deal with; they can just be expensive on some items compared to the dealerships. There are still a few Mazda dealerships that will let you order OEM FB/SA22C parts. These are the ones I've dealt with:

Garden City Mazda; Queens, NY
Jim Ellis Mazda; Atlanta, GA
Avondale Mazda; Avondale, AZ
Sunwest Mazda; Newport, OR

There's also RX7store.net, Banzai Racing, and, of course, Racing Beat, but those aren't selling OEM.
