Best Oil Filter???

Okay, for a while, I have been useing Mazda filters after i read that FRAM filters blow monkey *****. However, when I compared my Mazda Canada Filter and a FRAM filter, they were identical. Same stamping, same construciont, same machining. The Mazda filter was part # :B6Y1-14-302A-CA And the FRAM # PH6607.

Also, the filter Mazda says my car needs is the tiny miata filter, 2.5inches tall and a diameter of 2.5 inches. Should i try to find a bigger filter, or will the little filters work all the same>?

I searched for the "napa gold" online, and found it but also got a "Balkamp Oil Filter - K&N Filters". Anybody has any experience with that one? I'm about to do an oil change this weekend and I currently have a FRAM filter

Fram filters do suck, cut one open and the element looks like toilet paper.

I use pureoilater pure one filters

Well, I just threw out my last Fram oil filter. Order some WIX brand units for all my cars.

Here is a good link to read.
LINK to oil filter study.

I work at a quick lube and I agree that fram filters suck. We crush the old filters at the end of the day and the fram ones always explode because the crappy filter element truns to mush. I dont think that I would ever let a fram filter come within a couple feet of my car. Sometimes the NAPA silver filters blow up too, but not near as often as frams.

Puroilater and Wix are both good filters. You can put 2 different sized filters on, but neither of them are used on a miata. I use the smaller one because I cant remember the # for the bigger one, and Im too lazy to find it.

Did Russ Knize ever suspect he was writing one of the greatest treatises of automotive literature? That thing has been posted to every auto-related newsgroup, mail list and forum on the Internet. He must have single-handedly caused millions in lost business for Fram...all from a few minutes with a saw.

The Napa Gold is a Wix filter and a very good choice. Purolator is also good, as is AC Delco.

Stay away from Napa Silver--- they're made by Champion, not much better than Fram.

The Napa Gold, or any Wix filter for that matter will cost a bit more. Purolators are less expensive, as are AC Delco, but AC Delco filters offer the best bang for the buck IMHO.

And yes, Mazda filters in Canada are manufactured by Fram. I can't recall who manufactures the Mazda filters sold in the states, but they gotta be better than Fram.

i use k/n and love them!!! they are very durable and filter 10 microns plus. i have never had one explode and they all have a one inch nut at the top for easy removal. purolator pure one filters are exceptional as well. those and the napa golds (in a pinch) are the only filters i have ever used or would consider using.

I have been using Fram on my rotary engines for year but yesterday they have lost me for good. I do run the Mazda factory oil filter on race engines, RB says they are the best.

On everything else I am going with WIX because the Ag equipment guys swear by them and $6 for a oil filter is a lot better than $1500 for a new engine.

I thought about K&N but I have not found a good source for them. Meaning lowest price, free shipping and no sales tax.

I use Napa gold (Wix) on my engines. I did unfortunately get a Napa silver for my rebuild. I figured since I'll need to change it in 500 miles, I might as well. At least I made sure the engine was spotless on the inside. There is still bearing material shearing off though. Hmm...

Yeah, that oil filter study webpage has been in my favorites/bookmarks for years. No Fram for me.

Here in Canada, even the cheapest garbage filters sell for between $5 and $7. Good ones can be had for as little as $6 for an AC Delco or Purolator, and as much as $11 for a Napa Gold (Wix). You guys south of the 49th parallel have it good.

At the risk of thread jacking, what about oil pouring out when you take the filter off? I've had some brands that did not spill, and some that do. I'm using Purolator Pure One now. My current solution is to park the car where I plan to change the oil, and remove the filter the next day. Basically gives the oil time to drain out of the filter.

Somebody archive this! Lots of great info.

I know some people were saying that the FRAM ones also sometimes sent the oil pressure skyrocketing. That's not good for our engines for sure!

What i do is just take a nail and gently tap a small hole in the top of the filter. This relives the pressure in the filter and lets the oil drain back into the engine....

if you use a screwdriver to punch a hole in the top of the filter, the hole will allow air in and the oil to drain, a little while later take the filter off with alot less mess

Here's a disturbing update for those using Quaker State filters and thinking that they're getting a Purolator:

Since the oil filter study was updated Quaker State has changed hands. It's now owned by Penzoil, and Penzoil has their filters manufactured by none other than Fram. Guess who Penzoil now dictates Quaker State to buy their filters from. I'll give you two guesses, but you're only going to need one. As a result, I've purchased my last Quaker State filter and advise anybody who will listen to do the same.

On the other hand, the Napa Silver filter is now made by Wix, and there's little difference between it and the Napa Gold except for price.

if you have to seriously worry about a oil filter you may have more intense problems.

i've never had problems with NAPA gold filters.

frequent oil changes is far more important, IMO.
