what's your secret? c'mon ... spill? i'd give anything to get all that sweat and oil off the steering wheel and shifter of both my cars and i've been afraid to try anything stronger than soap and water for fear of screwing up the leather (on the MR2) ...

the shifterknob, ebrake handle and the horn cover on the steeringwheel are all made out the same thing and its NOT leather...rubber maybe?...eitherway thats why they discolor from what i guess is the sun...

good thing is i did my horn cover as well and tomorrow i'm probably going to do the ebrake handle...so my interior will have more red and less green

yeah ... i think the Rx-7's stuff are basically rubber and plastic. i have leather in my MR2. however, both cars have the same discoloration (less discoloration on the MR2, but it's there nonetheless) and stubborn crud that doesn't seem to come off with soap, water and vigorous scrubbing. yeah the sun does do a number on the interior.

so what did you use to clean it? or did you just paint it?

For real leather (on the MR2) use, "Leather in a bottle" by Zaino Brothers. It works real well for getting schmutz off leather.

bizzaro, how'd you make that look so nice?

I like mine better. (No pix)

Soon I will be welding the Z-axis handle from a Bridgeport mill the the lower half of a stock shifter. Should be pretty nice.

Thanx Jeff...

Here is what I did to get them to how they are now...

I was cleaning my interior today when I just looked at the shift ****, e brake handle and horn cover with a stink eye...(as I usually do)...because of their greenness

Well...I decided that I will experiment with the shift **** and so I took it off...grabbed my dremel and started on it with different bits...

First the grinder...TOO MUCH
Then the SS brush...TOO MUCH
Then the buffer...NOT ENOUGH
Finally the plastic brush wheel...JUST RIGHT

Carefully and slowly I started to rub off the green layer and it started showing the red...

It’s not perfect by any means but it is much better than before...it took about 1 hour to do the ****...then I was left with a dull looking ****...so I looked around the house...and found...CLEAR NAIL POLISH

First I buffed the ****...cleaned it with nail polish remover then painted a thin coat on the ****...giving the finishing look you guys see now...

I did the same with the horn button 'cept instead of using the brush I used a paper towel to spread the nail polish...this left it less dull but not as shiny as the ****...

This is why I’m hesitant to tell you guys what I did...it's kind of embarrassing that I’m not using the right tools for the right job

I love my dremel!

just wrap your fingers along either side and pull off...

i tried steel wool 000 and it wasn't agressive enough...i did however use it after using the dremel to smooth it out a little more...

If you have a high strength Acetone and a hard cloth that will soak it up them it will do wonder but be sure to wear gloves it does'nt feel the best on your hands. (Reads Bottle: Toxic to skin, Then pours all on towel and hand) I'll put some pics up of what my doors looked like before and after if somebody will host them?

That shift boot is from the Ebay auctions right? From Btelotte? I've been looking at those but I really want a solid black one... Does the white stitching screw everything up or does it look good when it's actually in the car?

That kicks butt! I'm going to have to try that on my project SE that's in the garage (the Grey Mouse). It's got the typical was-maroon-now-brown-or-green-or-whatever-the-hell-color-that-is problem as well.
Can't hurt to try yours and sweetege's methods. At worst: vinyl paint!

dude, don't be mocking my blue stiching on the shift boot bill will make them any color you want from what I understand. All black would be nice, but I still like my blue stiching.

Yeah I emailed him about an all black one and he quoted me $25, but I've seen the white stitched onrd on Ebay go for $7 many times.
The white stitch looks good with silver surround, but I'm thinking about painting my shifter surround and console surround gloss black.
