Battery relocation?

Just a quick question about moving the battery to the rear bin. Cant you just extend the original pos. battery wire to reach the batteries new location and hook it up while using the seatbelt bolt for the new ground? Would this be okay with a 0 gauge wire?

Thanks, Ed

Yea that will work. Are you still using the stock fusable links? If so now might be a good time to go with a FC fuseblock and run some larger wire to that as well...

Yeah still using the stock fusebox. For the battery what I did was I took the original pos. battery terminal off and used a o gauge distribution block so I can extend the cable towards the rear bin and at the same time still give me access to pos. terminal. in the engine bay. I need to rewire my ignition then I'll and start it. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Thanks, Ed

Search the FD forum about this. There has been some very well done jobs to relocate. It will also show you what will happen to your car if you do it the wrong way. You cant simply just extend the wires from the bay or else you might end up writing off your car; or worse.

I'm all for when your moving stuff to replace all the old wires with new. Cut open one of the old wires and 10/10 they will be corroded.

I'm in the middle of relocating my battery to the back bin right now. Wired the battery straight to the starter though. What exactly should I watch out for? You guys scared me, I don't want to write off my baby.

Wire from the battery to the starter and then from the starter to your fuse box under the hood. Make sure you beef up all the ground points in the car while your at it.

What size breaker did you use? I've been thinking about putting one in.

Put a breaker or large fuse at the battery, between the battery and the starter.
Mine is 100amp, IIRC $30 at local auto parts store(thanks John64).

Oh yeah, also used 2 stock cables butt connected together.
It turns over kind of slow when its cold out(30 f), but that may be the small battery I have.

Why a 200amp version? I have one, but I have a **** load of equipment. The great thing about the resetable ones are that you can turn if off, kind of like a security system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quick question guys. How are you mounting the battery hold downs? I noticed most of you dont use trays. Are you just drilling the floor?

Thanks, Ed

I used a tray drilled into the crossmember so I could place it front to back and save some room. Drilling into the floor would be easy enough though.

I built a frame of aluminum angle, bolted it to the floor, lined it with thin rubber 1/16".
One of the hold downs is through the floor, the other hooks into the crossmember.

Yes , on the first page of this thread. I'd have to remove the battery to get you better pics of the tray/frame. I used (6, I think) small flat head machine screws countersunk into the aluminum frame through the floor.
Here's a pic not posted earlier.

So one wire to the starter, a second forward to the fuseable links or 2nd gen fuseblock? Where do you pass the two positive wires through the firewall?

With the stock aluminum cable, I went under the center console, through the shifter rubber boot (with additional sheathing at that point) to the starter, then a smaller gauge wire to the fuse box.

My idea of how to get them in, is by feeding the wires through the AC holes. that go through the Firewall as I dont need AC anymore.

One wire from the battery to the starter (I used 2ga), another from the starter to the fusible links/fuse box (used 4ga, maybe overkill but oh well). No need for separate cables.
I ran the cable to the drivers side in the storage bin area (could put them IN the crossmember, I didn't) and then under the carpet towards the front, through the tranny tunnel and straight to the starter.
