backfiring, discussion...

So im kinda confused, everyone always says its normal for a rotary to backfire, my car used to backfire all the time... Then this winter I found all sorts of stuff wrong with it, I removed the emissions, installed full racing beat exhaust, threw new plugs in it and put in blaster 2 coils and most importantly new ignitors (one was blown). Now my car does not backfire at all, even if its reved up to 7000 rpm's it lets off smoothly... The car has a incredbile amount of power now then it ever had before... (minor modded 12a) Why does my car not backfire im confused, I know if I wanted to backfire badly I could increase the a/f mixture but im just curious as to why you guys say all rotarys backfire its just how it is, and my car doesn't...

I have make my car backfire. If I rev it up real high and then engine brake it will let out a shotgun blast, but during normal driving it dosent backfire at all. I have a GSL-SE though so that kinda makes a difference.

In my old 82 GS (SP 12A, racing beat exhaust) I would get lots of backfires, but again only when engine brakeing.

After I removed ALL emissions and even a few more things, I have yet to have it back fire over the last year.

About 75% of the time I'll get a backfire about five seconds after I shut her down. If I rev her up real high then kill it, it'll sound like a 12 gauge going off!

Check my sig Dan, pretty close to your setup...Not sure why yours won't speak...Maybe I have a small exhaust leak up front, but the system is new and sounds pretty tight...

in my experience, which is my streetable FB with full RB setup and then theres the racecar. From what I can tell if you have a quality exahust on it won't do it. If you have a lpud free flowing exhaust on like our racecar, then we get the shotgun backfire at shutoff, also the popping noises on deceleration. So in my opinion which is just that, a thought haha, it's strictly related to type of exhaust you have, not necessarily how rich or lean although that does make a huge difference. My old leaky exhaust would pop and hiss and make all kinds of noises then when I put on the full RB setup with presilencer it all went away.

My 7 started backfiring right after I installed the full RB exhaust on my 85-SE but like several others only when engine braking. The original exhaust leaked so badly im not surprised it never popped. I have several issues I still need to address with the idle speed so I also wonder if the popping will change. I use it to freak other drivers out but my wife doesnt like it too much...
