Question Is backfiring bad for my new muffler?

I just had this feature in my ecu enabled which cuts the fuel on decel... so now it backfires a lot.. I'm just wondering if the backfiring is gonna mean my muffler wearing out earlier? Muff is stainless-steel wool+glass packed.

I like it heheh..

Cheers

yes backfiring will kill the packing, most mufflers dont last long on these cars, try something straight through flow.

it is a straight muffler actually, but has a huge barrell around the pipe in the middle which is packed.

Yup.

That muffler was only on the car for 24 *hours* when it blew. And my car was fairly pop-n-bang free.

Fully welded mufflers are the *only* way to go.

wow lol, thats impressive.. yeah both my muffler and resonator are completely welded, so im betting they arent gonna blow open like yours... im more concerned about it burning up the packing though so it'll get louder... ah well :P

My old muffler was folded over (not welded) but I didn't have a prob with that.. wasnt backfiring back then though..

meh who cares about being loud. my car is so fuggin loud it really shouldn't be a street car but meh. Its not loud till it gets on boost and hits the higher RPMs, normal driving is alright. I have 3" downpipe, midpipe and peter farrell SS catback so.. ya lol

N/A is much louder than turbo so no worries for you.. I have a full 3" exhaust. 3" from header. 3" cat, 3" reso (4" reso barrell), 3" straight thru the muff.

I care because every time the cops get me its $40 to have a sound test done with a pea shooter on the back...

cool cool, well im guessing the backfiring is not gonna hurt the muff more than just running the engine really that much.. not much I can do anyway.. except maybe take it off he he he

I can get some real loud backfires decelerating in 3rd gear then just push on the throttle real slowly *BAAAANG*

I care because my last noise ticket was $100 and the car was quiet enough that I could not hear the exhaust over the wind noise.

Lol. How fast were you going to not hear it over the wind noise?

How did the officer measure the noise? Was there an inspection of your vehicle? Did he sight any particular ordinance?

I'm just curious as my NA was loud but not as loud sitting at a light next to a Harley. Never got a ticket and I've drove side by side with state and local police.

Just wondering how unfairly subjective this is. Besides it's all relative. My car is probably no louder than other cars made in 1980. Just cars have gotten quiter and people have forgotten.

BTW loud pipes save lives. I have had many people not see me and start to pullout infront of me. I just tap the gas and they look right at me and stop.

well the reason harelys and motorbikes can have such loud exhaust is what you just said, saftey. your right a lot of *** holes do stuff with out looking or paying attention. my stupid girlfriend doesnt turn to look, she uses her mirrors. but if your on the highway and can physically(not sure if hearing is a physical activity) hear that chopper, you know he's there. its bullshit politics

see the ebay can as an oversized resonated exhaust tip! which
is all it really is anyways.

My personal preference is magnaflow if you are going with anything other than racingbeat. Magnaflows are fairly cheap, easy to get, and have a lifetime warranty.

yeah, but with all the huge suvs on the road these days, my fb is about as hard to see as the harleys (especially since my car is charcoal with black rims), so we could use that extra noise protection too =) I remember one day when i had suburbans/tahoes to the front, back, and both sides of me, I thought i was gonna die...

Absolutely agree! Louder is safer! Nothing quite like coming around a corner and you see 20 people run for their life hahah..

Very true too! Another reason to go loud I might bring that up if I see cops

65ish.

I could clearly hear the tires of the vehicles passing me, so I know the exhaust wasn't loud.

This BTW was *after* I put the glasspack in the mid pipe, which did quiet it down a lot. For a week, anyway

On the way to an event I'll be driving at about 4500rpm for three-four hours. I like quiet exhausts!

It's also my experience that morons notice loud cars about as much as they do quiet cars - not at all.
