anyone gotten thier car hot tanked?

ok this seems pretty far fetched, but i plan one day to get a really really mint fb shell. and get it hot tanked, or chemical dipped, you know like in the old school hot rod magizines where they would take an old rusted ford t body or some muscke car and get it dipped in a a number of chemicals that remove every bit of contaminations and paint and what not, from every nook and cranny, possible,

im just wondering if anyone has ever had this done to a fb, and how the results were, what the pricing of something like that is, etc, it just seems like a cool way to build a car from the ground up starting from fresh...

this is what gave me the idea, its a pretty awsome car, and the cleanest 240 possibly ever

I heard theres a shop here thatll do it for less than $500. That is the way to do it if you ask me.

Cant access that link, you need to be registered.

Check out this link, it was on the 1st gen mailing list a few weeks ago. Maybe an alternative, but kinda extreme DIY.

Thought about doing it but wondered about sealing the inside portions of the frame...

ya i thought it would be wicked to start completely fresh, but my car has a dented rear quarter panel so i thought i would start with a completely mint shell from somewhere, or make carbon fibre ones, or something...

that site about using a dc charger is cool, but i think if i did all the work of getting the car apart, i would get some company to do it for me,,,

hey camocarl how were the results, what sort of prep did you have to do, what did you do to ensure the rust wouldnt come back between the parts in the unibody that cannot be reached, how much did it $$cost$$, and the big question do you have any pictures, !!!
anything else you can tell us about the proceedure?

thanks

I bought it this way just as a shell, no doors, no suspension under it, no wiring..im talking a BARE naked body. From what he told me, it was dipped in some chemical solution, and then dipped in some sort of primer or paint. It ended up costing about 1k. But its well worth it, it got out all the sound deadaning material out of it. Looks like new. Its out in storage in a barn...I havent had any use for it yet...Just as a spare. Carl

one question is are you going to be able to repaint all of the surfaces that are stripped clean?
another alternative that you might want to look into is sodablasting

afaik it's just like hot tanking an engine block - all the gunk comes off, leaving only clean metal. So you should be able to prime and paint as per normal after fixing rust holes, etc.

Just watch the blast media you use, I have a small sandblaster and depending upon the media I use it can strip slowly, or at a speed thats scary, its just with the rougher media it can also pit (from the force) the item you are sandblasting. can make for a lot of surfacer/blocksanding if you are not carefull.

if you do get a car dipped, weld the **** outta the seams that were "glued" together.. those spot welds arent as good for rigidity as a good solid seam..
seams also dont rust as fast, and seal up the innards of the unibody, preventing it from rotting within.

that'd be one sweet frame when you're finished with it.

Lol Nice byproduct, collect the gasses and create yourself a hydrogen powered rotary.. be carefull not to blow yourself up. and then you can collect the oxygen bottle it and create a hydrogen motor that needs no intake.. runs off the oxygen bottle.. only exhaust would be hot air and water.. lol would need a hell of a stainless exhaust though.

then you can take it through emmisions and laugh at the guys. put a cup under the tailpipe and drink the water lol
