it ALL depends on what you want. If you want something that will last for a long while and will still be really good, go with Racing Beat. They are a little pricey, but they are IMO the best. Mindtrain makes a good setup from what I've heard.

Whatever you do, stay away from Pacesetter/Monza exhaust. They are the cheapest POS you can find.

I agree with Manntis, go for the Racing Beat setup. I used it for alot of years on my street ported 12A with no problems. I now use a 3" custom with a Magnaflow for my turbo setup.

i made my own exhaust, got some pipes, mufflers and a colector from summit. ran me about 170 for everything except the headder

i second mantis' response, and this is coming from someone who got their's custom made.

last november i got a racing beat header, 2.25" piping, a cat-co cat, and dual tip muffler. its loud as hell, and i htink ive offically burned through my cat. ive seen a couple first gens with it, and i have driven one, it feels faster and sounds SO much better. you wont be dissappointed, i know i wish i went that route.

I made my own. 10' of 2.5'' stainless, and 4 U bends for $125(only ended up using 2 bends). $50 presilencer- Moroso SpiralFlow, it works great, flows great, and has no packing to blow out or burn up. $75 rear muffler- MeganRacing.com Apexi N1 style, full stainless.

I ran the exhaust under the axle, and have no problems with speed bumps or anything.

My Racing Beat is dead-quiet. I plan on building a custom 2.5" header-back with a silencer and some sort of ricey N1 muffler....and getting all the piping HPC coated. Piping is cheap (maybe 75 bucks), silencer is about 35, muffler is about 50, and HPC coating is about 10/bucks a foot for the piping.

Well i paid $120 for the Pacesetter header (yech, required so much labor to make it flow half decent) which bolted right up to the stock heat exchanger since the Pacesetter's one-size-fits-all part is made for '79-80 cars. That worked until the stock muffler no longer muffled and i started getting tickets, so I spent $30 and got a 2 1/4" flange, a 2 1/4" flex pipe, and a $15 2 1/4" "turbo muffler". Sounded like a deflating blimp-sized bagpipe, and about 24 hours after installation the muffler's seam exploded. About 40 miles from home. At midnight.

So the stock crap went back on, I bought a Race Ready for $25 (really $50 for the two) and made flanges to fit it in where the heat exchanger used to be. Now my exhaust system didn't have to be free flowing to be quiet on the street, since I could just open the dump on the track. (That thinking was way flawed....) So i slid what was left of the stock muffler off of its inlet pipe, bolted one of the OEM mufflers from an '89 Continental on there, and now i had a nice quiet exhaust system for the street.

Thing still ran 15.8 through that 1 3/4" Lincoln muffler.

If you can weld, do some research and make your own. If not, go RB or Mazdatrix. $700 for pipe is rediculous to me......

Also, think of the future.

I was able to build a custom system for mine for about a $100 less than a RB system (everything but headers). Cost includes the $250 welding set.
The advantage of going custom is you can choose your own tube diameters and materials. It is hard work though.
I constructed my rear muffler similar to a RB but used stainless steel. I made it so I can pull it apart to inspect the condition of the insulation. Presilencers are 2 long cherry bombs refilled with stainless wool. Sound is very similar to RB maybe a little louder.
2000 hard miles later and everything is as good as new.

I bought the RB streetport muffler, and the Power pulse muffler, but I decided to get the center section custom made.
nice 2 1'4 inch dual primarys back to a 12"long 3" mid section.
ran me the $295 to get the custom parts done, and whatever the muffler and header cost (cant remember).
I think about $550 total.

Very well built, has a deep sexy zing to it, and VERY liveable sound levels.
Sacraficed a littlr power donw low, but it really comes to life after 5500 rpms.

See, I have a little problem on money. I need to keep things as cheap as possible. I am going to make my own. So far, I have come up with:

-a custom DUAL exhaust (stock manifold) made of 2" pipe, using a muffler almost right after the manifold. The muffler will have 1 in and 2 outs.
-After the muffler, one cherry bomb on each pipe exiting on each side of the car right in front of the rear wheels.

The only problem is the muffler. I have to get one WITHOUT packing. With it that close to the exhaust manifold, even stainless packing will burn out I think. The cherry bombs are cheap enough that I can replace them if needed. Be like your normal tune up thing. The idea is to keep backpressure low, but have a muffled exhaust. That is why I am going with two cherry bombs, otherwise I would only use the muffler.

i have a custom exhaust, i had it for 3 years in the car and never had a problem and i used it in turbo and N/A form, it was 2 1/4 inch pipe with a dynomax muffler that it was as a presilencer and fron the presilencer 2 1/4 to a megan racing N1 fart muffler. it wasnt loud but it wasnt quiet ethier but since i put the turbo you can barelly hear it. i heard the turbo more that the exhaust. and i paid like 200 bucks fro everything. now im doing the same setup but with 3"

I think I will go with the flowmaster 50 series. No packing to burn out.

Yea, just the baffle welds to brake (commonly within weeks), and the tinny sound from using too thin of material...

I put on a Borla cat back on, sounds great, cost 420.00 shipped. Bolted right on with no problems, took about 2 hours in my driveway.

Much of the increase in performance from an exhaust is the header. RB sells a header kit, to custom make your own, or go with a uncollected header they sell. The difference in flow from the stock manifold is astonishing and much of gain will come into play with a header.

Also, watch out with the sidepipes....cops will love to give ya tickets for that

I have figured out my exhaust. I have:

-Magnaflow muffler. 18" of long straightthrough power.
-Side exit exhaust (hopefully). My friend has a 302 in an 83 Mercury Capri with sidepipes and cherry bombs. He was pulled over only because of tire noise. Cop didn't care about the sidepipes and he has 3" boom tubes.

I got the magnaflow for $200 with tax, and the piping should come to no more than another $100.

Another thing, on the RB website it says that by eliminating the cats and getting a high flow muffler, you are getting about a 15% increase in power. Just the cats make a big difference.

I still have the stock exhaust manifold, which sucks...but I'll find a nice header soon.

I had a custom shop weld up a 2.5" exhaust from the manifold back to a turbo muffler. That empties into some goofy design chamber, and then splits off into 2 pipes so that I have dual exhaust. The tips themselves are resonators.

It's quiet - but in a "You ain't laughin now....are you Honda Boy?" kinda way.
