Anybody used a thrush muffler on their 1st gen?

If so how's it sound? And how's it hold up to the rotary heat? I searched but only found one thread with a vid/sound clip but the link didn't work.

i used a pair of the straight thru glasspacks, and they lasted 16 street miles and about 7 half assed laps on the track.

i think if you used one of the other mufflers in the rear it would be ok, but in the middle they can't take the heat!

I use one as a mid-muffler. The paint was gone after a 2 mile road test. After a trip to the dragstrip, the bare metal was purple and blue.

It is certainly not appropriate as the only muffler on the vehicle, it will however be useful as part of an overall system with two or three more mufflers.

Itll be really loud in 2 days if you drive hard. Itll be really loud in about 3 weeks if you drive slow.

I'm not too worried about sound as long as it's not too ridiculous and it's not gonna get me a ticket. Right now I'm running a RB header straight piped to a RB power pulse muffler.

It will be ridiculous. The amount of muffling a Thrush does on a rotary is minimal at best. They do work okay if you basically replace every section of straight piping in the exhaust system with muffler.

For what it's worth. My rear muffler is an Ultraflo. It was a block and a half of normal street driving when the tone changed and I knew that the packing melted. I couldn't tell when the Thrush melted down internally, the sound stayed the same. I previously had a similar muffler that I sliced open and repacked and there was no noticable change in sound volume or tone, so I figure, at least for a mid muffler, the packing doesn't do very much, so it's okay if it blows out. That early in the exhaust system, there's just so much sharp directed energy that the muffler can't accomplish much for the "hard" pulses, but the softer ones can still get lost in the perforated core. Maybe.

RB mufflers are good at being fairly quiet while not exploding a lot, but they aren't that great for power.

I'll take a negligible loss of power for superior sound and longevity. I sold one of my RB street port systems that was at least 10 years old, and it only had minor surface rust, still functioning excellently. May be a bit louder than it was new, but it still sounded awesome.

If the RB muffler isn't so hot (Excuse the term ) as far as weight or power, what is? I thought those were generally accepted as the go to muffler. I am thinking I have heard of some people using Magnaflow? Is that right? I thought RB was really the only reliably tested muffler that could take the heat.

Racing Beat = Tried and tested, cost vs difficulty of installation, longevity vs weight...Are there better set ups? Simple answer is yes, but at what trade offs? Remember, just about anything you do to a street legal car will be a compromise in one way or another...
If you want to do it once, easy installation, decent performance, and a conservative sound....go Racing Beat. On the other hand, if you like fabbing up multiple exhaust systems, plus you have money and time to spend figuring what sounds and performs best for your application...be the first to get a Monza header, glass packs and a fart can....then post your results

I used to have my RB header with 2.5 inch straight pipes all the way to a straight through magnaflow muffler. Verdict: Too ******* Loud.

I got new exhaust made. Moved the magnaflow to after the header and added a RB universal powerpulse in the back. It's way less loud and its a better sound. No more bees in a tin can

When you drive a heavily ported engine like mine daily you learn to love the RB mufflers and care less about how much power you may be losing by using them.
I've played with exhaust/mufflers the whole 4 years I've onwed my car, and now that I have an RB muffler I'm finally happy and I don't plan on changing to anything else.
Tone, sound level, look, and quality are all the best. If it doesn't flow as good, or doesn't produce as much power I haven't noticed it. The current exhaust I have installed is loved by my Butt Dyno.
