alt swap confirmation

I got a new '85 'se alt. Its got a plug connection on the back of a " S " and a " L". Its also got a connection with a nut labled "B".

I got a '82 12A. The connection are a screw witha nut thats got a cable thats all white with a red stripe. Its got a plug out the back thats got a solid black wire and a wire thats white with a black stripe.

so I connected the white with the red stripe thats with the nut in the same basic position and then connect the black to the " L " and the w/b to the " S "..? or am I mistaken? I was following the wiring diagrams on the net.

L and S ? Are you sure it is an 85 alt? It sounds like maybe an S5 alt. The SE alt is the same as the '82. Same plug and everything (a bit more current, though). Throw up a pic or something so we know what you have. If it is L/S style alt, you will need to follow the S5/FD alt install instructions. There is a thread in the archive called "2nd gen alt in 1st gen" or similar. It shows how to do it correct. Basically the L terminal is for the alt warning light. S terminal goes to constant 12v. B is the output (large wire the goes to fusible links).

ok Ken, I got this alt from a 85 13B 'se engine. I had in my garage for a while and tryed to sell it to someone. He took a look and said the engine would only last for a lil while and then require a rebuild. so I took it home and took it apart... the alt was not hooked up. I didn;t think anything of it. What do you say? is this an '85 alt?

Nope, that is an S5 alt. Good upgrade. That is what I have on my 7. Works much better than the stock alt. These alts are rated at 80 amp whereas your '82 is probably rated at 55 amp. Follow that thread in the archive about the install. I can help you if you run into any questions.

I used female spade connector to connect the alt, but if you can get a plug for it (wrecking yard or something), that would be a bit better. I also did a 2nd gen fuse box install at the same time and replaced the alt output wire with some 8ga. that I got at an audio shop.

You will notice that the stud on the output post is too big for the stock wiring. The post is removable. There is a plastic cover that covers the nut that holds it on. It is smaller in size and should accomodate the stock wiring. Just make sure that the output wire can't accidently touch the body of the alt.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.

Kent

Edit: That is the thread I was talking about. The ignition switch (top wire) is not used with the new alt. Insulate the end and tape that wire off somewhere. You will also see that your plug is in a different position. That is because your alt is from an NA and the one shown is from a TII. The alts are otherwise the same.

wow talk about jackpot.. i guess i truely don't know ****!

thanks for your help, I am going to do the swap right now. I have everything needed. I also have 8 awg laying around somewere cus I took out a system with 2 amps out the "old" '85 that I am currently using for spare parts.

I'll just cut open the path that the white/red wire takes and remove it. Then replace it with some high quality wire. I'll take some pics while I am at it. brb in about an hr or so. wish me luck.

swap complete.. I had to use a big nut with no threads as a spacer.

Cool. That was fast. Have you tried it out yet? On mine, I used the S5 spacer, I believe. My engine is 13B, so it may need different spacing. Mine is basically connected the same as yours currently. I may eventually run a separate wire from the S to the battary + (this is how it is on the 2nd gens). I would also like to find a little rubber cover for the output post.

You were really lucky to have a nice S5 alt on hand and not even know it. It is a nice upgrade. I recommend it highly.

geez, you guys are lucky..try doing the alt swop when u originally have an external regulator that was changed by previous owner so wiring is all cocked up.
but thank goodness for the guys on here....the B wire s unchanged...thats the output wire for the alt. then there is the S which needs power, and then there is the L which must go to the alt light. now i haven't started up yet....but i have given the baby ignition....and the alt light came on. i guess proof will be in the pudding when i eventually do start and the light goes off and the battery doesn't go flat. at least i got a good 12V reading when i turned on ignition....and no smoking wires !
