This Is Almost Pointless...

It's no fun to come here and not have a question to ask because I dont have any problems with my car . I would answer some more questions, but I still have a limited knowledge of the exact workings of these cars. I understand lots about them, but there are minor things that I have yet to learn. So I end up just coming here and reading about everyone elses problems... Oh well, any fun is better than no fun .

~T.J.

PS - Please dont tell my car that I said that I dont have any problems, you know she'll come up with something...

Sounds to me like it's time to find yet another Seven, one you can feel free to experiment with and modify. I note your ponies are "bone stock" and that's really quite all right, but you're not getting the full impact of owning a Seven....Garage time, dirty hands, running the yards, collecting tools, feeling really good about completing a working mod, and of course, spittin' messages at folks on the Forum.

Find yourself a tired little pony, get 'er into yer corral, feed 'er and nurse 'er back to health, pep 'er up, and be one of the happiest Buckaroos on the prarie....

A tip of the Stetson,
Denny, from the 'ol corncrib....

Well its not like I didnt do any work to get them the way they are. I have worked long and hard on both of them, I just used all stock parts when doing it, or havent got the funds to do anything interesting yet. So, I sit and wait for my next problem...Until then, I just admire the machine

Id be happy to work on one if you wanted to ship it up here to Washington, and of course pay for everything, Id just do the work...well i wouldnt do it for free . So, i guess it would just be better to send it to a shop, or do it right by doing it yourself

Ya'll don't know Denny too well! He aint even gotta damn horse! He rides around town on Mr. Epitrichoid, a jackass that doubles as his woman! His damn hat's too big, too, and them six guns aint even loaded!
Why hell...He aint nuttin but a yella bellied walkin talkin barrel o' chicken ****!

I seen how he became a big "folk hero" n' all. Was'nt purdy, I'll tell ya!
Why I was in a saloon in Lima...Ohio, that is; 'n some nasty drunk ol bastard with one eyeball challenged that Denny critter to a duel...We all reckoned it was on accounta he was starin at 'em...his one rotten eye, I mean. We did'nt know the real reason Denny was there.
He bitch slapped Dennys big ole Stetson clean off his head when he hit 'em with his glove. Denny, that chicken liver...he wet his pants, and started bawlin like a beat *****!
Anyways, they went outside 'n so did ever-body else. The whole bunch was wagerin on who was gonna win causin ole Rotten Eye was so drunk 'n all. Ever one else kept sayin ole Rotten eye did'nt see two o' ever thin causin he only had one eye n' all. He could get as drunk as he wanted to, and still only see one o' yas.
Well there they was, just a standin in the road...musta been bout midnight. That lil' Denny was a tryin ta load his six gun when he went 'n dropped all his damn bullets in the dirt. Well he bent down just as ole Rotten Eye shot at 'im, and a course he missed.
So there's lil Denny tryin ta fill up his guns, with bullets a flyin over his head on accounta Mr. Rotten not bein able ta hit much a nuttin; when from around the bend behind ole Rotten Eye comes a chargin Mr. Epitrichoid the jackass!
Well that damn mule trampled poor ole Rotten Eye ta death! Ta death, I tell ya!
Well hell, no one was spectin sumtin like that ta happen, so ever one gave each other their money back. Afterall, t'was'nt Denny that killed 'im!

Well the whole bunch of us was about ta shoot ole Mr. Epitrichoid the jackass, and run poor Denny outta town when Mr. Fibblesworth the telegrapher from the train station came a runnin around the bend. Hell...He tripped over ole Rotten Eyes dead corpse, and just a went flyin'!
He could read n' write real good, but all else'n, he was dumber 'n a box a' rocks!
Anyways, he read off a piece a paper that ole Rotten Eye, AKA "Piddidle", was a wanted in five states for defacin national treasures, Mr. Fibblesworth said. I guess ole Johnny Rotten had been a goin from state ta state smashin up things called "Rx-7"s, whatever in hell they are. Said he was smashin them with somethin called a "civik".
We never did understand what exactly ole Rotten Eye had been doin' but it was high time we had a hero.

So Mr. Epitrichoid the jackass was spared, someone dusted off Dennys Stetson, and we all went back inside and bought the new hero whisky.

...N' that's the story o' the most yella bellied barrel o' chicken **** hero there ever was!

Last I heard, that Denny critter was ridin' round the prarie rescuin these funny rx-7 animals, nursin 'em all back ta healthy, I reckin'. Hell...I ain't never even seen one.
Crazy lil' bastard!

...Ever since that lil thang down in Lima, that Denny's been a bit trigger happy. Word is he was riden his jackass, Epitrichoid, down the road n' a Honda drove up n' backfired right behind 'im. Well ole Denny whipped out his pistol and plugged that thang fulla six holes before he realized it was just poor Mr. Fibblesworth jest tryin' ta get to the train station ta go ta work.
Well Mr. Fibblesworth'll tell ya. He says that he told Denny that what he done was just plain mean 'n all. And Ya know what that Denny says right back without even so much as blinkin'? He says just like Mr. Eastwood, "There ain't nuttin mean 'bout puttin a nasty no good rotten dirty Honda outta it's misery."
Well ole Mr. Fibblesworth was so mad that he was a contemplatin shootin Denny dead right there; but ya know, Mr. Fibblesworth aint never done shot nobody before.
So Denny says, "I know what yer thinkin. "Did he fire six shots, or only five?" Well to tell ya the truth, in all this confusion I kinda lost track maself. But seein as how this is a forty-four magnum; the most powerful handgun in the world, n' can blow yer head clean off; you got to ask yourself just one question..."Do I feel lucky?"
...Well do ya...Punk?"
"I did'nt think so. Now stop starin at ma boxers, and go on about yer business, you four eyed weasle lookin ************!"

That Denny critter done let all that hero stuff go ta his head. Ifin ya ask me, he's just plain looney!

When everything's going smoothly, there's only two things to do... Enjoy it (enjoy it? HOW?) or make trouble.

Or you can just take my '80. It's got more problems than the 9 cars they promised yah combined! Well only a COUPLE problems, but they add up bigger in the end!

...In both an effort to turn this thread back into something of use, as well as an attempt to regain my dignity, I'll ask something pertainant to the salt thingy...

Any of you chemists know of anything that could be sprayed like a liquid under the car that will react with NaCl to give byproducts that'll be inert and rinse-off-able? (I.E. - stop eating the steel?)
I intend to raise my baby up, and spray the **** outta her with a yet - to - be identified "stuff" during the first step of 'spring cleaning'. If someone has something in mind, it would be step #2 after thorough rinsing; step #3 being another rinsing, followed by perhaps a friggin sandblasting, then painting, then undercoating.....the list goes on.

My car was a Florida girl with no blemishes, and no pantys (under coating). This is her first salty taste of winter. To have neglected that fact would've been pure stupidity, but it was'nt neglect...my wife took over my "winter car" for her own use (a Volvo beater), and so I had to expose my girl to the nasty New York salt.
I never got the chance to undercoat her. Now I'm greatly concerned that to do the undercoating will be to trap minute particles of hidden salt, where they can fester like hidden sores!
I'm particularly concerned about the frame rails and seams, as they can be caked up on the inside and it would be hard to tell.

I'm willing to put off my Eaton project just to spend time for preservation of my car, though I doubt I'll ever drive her in the winter again.

So perhaps there is a substance that will more readily bond with NaCl, or a compound that will split it; though I'm inclined to think that having another kind of salt (sodium) and a different cloride would be as bad or worse.

How does the reaction between ferrous and NaCl look on paper; anyone know?
I could guess...

NaCl + 2H2O + Fe = NaH3 + HCl + FeO2...??!!!!

That's not right! That's lye, hydrochloric acid, and rust, right?!
Could that be right? Once the caustic and the acid come together, they're not broken back up that easily, right?

C'mon, you college kids! Show us what you paid all them big bucks for!

Cool Sterling, ya dang fool....

Just so everybody knows, Sterling drives a straight 6 nova with a hogged out Quadrajet.

Don't be thinking 'bout no Sandblasting. Been there, done that. Started looking under the race car, seeing little traces of minor surface rust popping up here and there between the remnants of that nasty factory rustproofing crud. Said to myself, "self, I think I'll strip this thing down to a bare tub and save this thing from rust". Figured the cage was worth too much to start over with a bare tub. Grind off the rustproofing and paint, it doesn't look too bad. Just a few strips along the seams. Fire up mister pressurized tank sandblaster, decide to clean it all up pretty and put a coat of nasty zinc chromate primer stuff on to protect it forever. (last I knew, the primer is getting hard to come by. EPA won't let people make it any more) First thing you need to know is you will be sandblasting for like 500 hours. During this time, your industrial size air compressor will require a new pump, no matter how big you thought the darn thing was. If it ain't rated for continuous use at 20 cfm or better, you'll chew it up. You'll soon find that you can reuse the sand. Wait until you're entire garage is 6 inches deep, sweep it up and refill the tank. Nevermind putting up plastic sheeting to contain the sand, it won't work. Best bet is to empty the garage of everything but the sandblaster and bare tub. You'll find its easier to destroy the garage once you're done, so don't worry about trying to clean it up.

Now that everythings going well, you'll find that all those little traces of rust along the seams have turned into gaping holes. You'll need to weld plates over these. You'll also start to notice that all the rust comes from inside of the boxed sections, like the rockers. You'll start trying to cut these open to get in there with the blaster, but you'll never get it all out. Eventually you'll weld it all back together, spray it with primer and paint, reassemble the entire car, and take it to the racetrack. First time it gets over 80mph, you'll realize that there is still 80 lbs of sand hiding somewhere in the car. It makes your eyes gritty, obstructs vision, makes it hard to breath. Try not to crash. And don't worry, by next season it will subside. In fact, the dust storm will be almost completely gone in two years, which is about the same time you will start to notice the rust starting to come back along the seams.....

Neil Young said it best: "Rust never sleeps".

Any bare surface metal, clean it up and paint it. Don't try to fix it if its gotten up into the rockers, in between the three layers of metal in the rear wheel wells, ect. If it was a clean car before the winter, keep it clean, wash it alot, and then get it dried thoroughly. You need moisture for rust formation, so if its not bad and you keep it dry, life is good. Storing it outside in the great midwest will cause it to rust out eventually. Garage good. Snow bad. If you remove the plastic plate on the door sill, you can look down into the rockers and see how good they are. I look at used tubs by pulling the bins out of the back and looking carefully at the rear wheel wells and floor back there, as well as down into the rockers. You probably haven't ruined it after one winter, if it was clean to start with.

BTW, Mikey D wants an update on the blower project, and the rest of us wanna know if Melissa has gotten used to the carb shrine yet...

IMO undercoating just traps the water between the undercoat and the metal and enhances corrosion. My Subaru literally crumbled apart on the underbody when you touched it with a screwdriver, the only thing holding parts of the floor together was the undercoating. One day while workong my my '80 I noticed tha some of the undercoating was peeling off. I didn't want it hanging there to trap muck and water so I pulled on it. A big 18"x6" or so sheet came off along with a LOT of flaky rust - the damage had already been done but you couldn't tell because the undercoating was hiding it!
