Is air supposed to come out of a muffler here?

I did a pressure test on my current exhaust and found that the heat exchanger, connector pipe and muffler leaked. The muffler just blew tons out from between the outer heat shield and the actual muffler.

I found a used exhaust and bought it, as, for ~40 years old, looks pretty good.

Before I start cleaning it up, I did a pressure test on it (that mcd cup is attached to a leaf blower) and it blows a ton of air from the same place

Is this just normal for a rotary muffler?

blow air into it from the other end, as in the direction the exhaust flows. where u have it connected is just a chrome dress up piece, it does not seal around the pipe the comes out of the muffler.

That's a heat shield, there's probably a moisture hole that the air is escaping from. My advice is to just bolt it up and see how it sounds.
