Air Pump Removal
What else needs to be done to my 85 rx-7 since I have just removed my air pump? Is it dangerous to remove this? I was told I would get more HP, and of course, removing it takes a few pounds off. I have a stock exhaust system, but the catalytic converters have been removed. The rats nest is still there.
I am wondering if there is something that could catch fire from me not removing this thing correctly.
Anyone know about this for sure?
Please help.

you'll want to put on one of these:
it's a dual alternator belt pully that lets you add a 2nd belt, making sure your waterpump still turns. Without adding another belt after removing the airpump you leave a small amount of alt belt actually turning the waterpump, which makes it prone to slippage and therefore the potential to overheat (read: kill) your engine.

By removing the smog pump you will gain absolutely zero horsepower.. By removing the rats nest you will gain again, nothing in the lines of power. It just makes the thing remarkebely simple to work on.. Now removing the cats you will gain, some power... If you remove the air pump you will need to remove all 3 cats..
You wont catch anything on fire by just removing the cats and the air pump..
And get a dual alternator pulley
BTW: Horsepower gains are ONLY achieved by forcing more air/fuel through the motor... The fastest you can do this, the more horsepower you will make. If you have a better intake/carb etc combo, and better exhaust with barely little restriction you make more horsepower.

You won't make any more HP except in the sense that the engine no longer has to devote HP to turn the pump...dumping the mechanical fan...a proven 5 - 10% HP increase by itself..( Ha ha! I've brought it up again...runs for flame-proof suit... ..) follows the same train of thought but the stock mech fan is a HUGE, MONSTROUS, GIGANTIC, WALA of a mechanical parasite that you will definitely notice has been removed unless the fan clutch was dead to begin with...

Dual belt pulley is not necessarily needed. Click on my sig to grab the rats nest removal tutorial - it also details removal of the airpump, so just skip ahead to that part. </shameless plug>

the pulley is off my website (database is being repaired for the next few hours)
It can normally be seen at http://www.rotorhead.ca/catalogue.php?category=engine
the extra belt is identical to the belt that is on there now, but it's recommended to replace the existing belt with a new one at the same time, or one will be streched and the other one new-tight, and the stretched one will slip.

Horsepower can also be gained by removing paricitc (sp) load from an engine, how much power? it just depends. Anything running off a belt takes HP to turn, so removing the air pump WILL gain HP. BUT nothing worth while.

Rotormotordriver: Where can you get a dual alternator belt pully? Do you have to get a whole new alternator? I think they look cool as well, and it sounds like it would protect my engine.
Oh yeah, how much did yours cost you (dual alternator belt pully)?

This morning, I went to a salvage yard and pulled off a carb. It was a biotch to get at (driver-side firewall bolt). I decided it would be fun to remove a rats nest. Out came the hammer! Wham Wham! It was fun bashing it (ha ha), but I also got to see where all of those hoses go. It turned out that they were too proud of that carb, so I am going to go to a different place in a few hours and pull another one. I also ordered a rebuild kit. Target is Christmas morning to have a rebuilt carb. Family will probably delay work.

That's a pretty neat trick, pratch...I would've never thought to drop the clicker on a pic, but I see it now that you pointed it out...pretty cool out-of-the-box thinking...
