air filter

would a regular small cone shaped air filter on top of the Nikki be good enough?

Why a cone filter on the niki? Doesn't make sense to me y not just use a stock replacement. You wont see any power gains and like stated above it wont fit under the hood

You can go with a mushroom style filter, that should be roughly the same height as the stock carb hat. I see a lot of Turbo cars using that style of filter for cramped engine bay space and looks.

Buy the Racing Beat Power Pulse carb hat and foam filter. It will set you back about $100 shipped. It looks amazing, cleans up the bay, simplifies the bay, adds a small bit of power, and makes it sound gutsier. Takes about 10 minutes to install.

Depending on the size of the filter it may restrict flow.

take pics i'm interested on this look. i don't think it'll restrict flow, in fact i think it'll be waaaay too much lol. is it nice and tight so that it doesn't fly off the carb? seems like there's not much gripping area for the filter on the nikki, if it's nice and tight, you should be golden, except on extremely hot days when the hood gets really hot all you're gonna be doing is sucking that hot air. i kinda like this idea and i've never thought about it

Roughly $100 shipped for the hat and filter.

Heat wrap your header if your worried about hot air...

It's 2 pieces. I'm running the foam filter. You can run the stock filter, but it fits crappy. You have to extend the top bolt by 2 inches or so. Just buy the foam filter, you'll think me later.

i have seen that, i'm not crazy about the look of it, but i do like how its more functional than the stock, i've thought about just "modifying" the stock breather by removing/plugging all the hose fitments and cut holes all the way around it so it basically functions as a "filter holder" and running a K&N filter, but i'd like to get another breather to experiment with so in case i **** up i still have an extra one.

idk, that's why i said i'd have to get an extra one in case it looks bad besides i would repaint it and all that **** so it doesn't look like the stock, the rb is not a bad look, its just not that impressing, i prefer the open filter look

Wasn't one of the members thinking about making a plexi-glass carb hat?

That was I, and not many were interested in it

He ment cutting the spaces between the carb hold-downs for the top hat, and instead of the stock filter running a K&N.

Same as stock, only more holes and better filter.

You were talking about plugging your breather? Don't that, you'll wreck your motor due to crankcase pressure buildup and gasoline diluted oil. You at least need to have a breather filter on there. The stock positive crankcase ventilation system is best, so run it if your still have the stock carb.

i have no more emissions, so all the tubes underneath the breather are not being used, my idea is to grind those off, and fill up the holes.

i want something that will give me better air flow, but can still use stock filters just in case, basically it will look something like this:

I was JUST about to do that with my spare airbox here, but my dremel is out of cutting discs

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to get one of those aftermarket chrome filter holders from the parts shop, and then work up an adaptor plate to fit the Nikki hole?

it's also a lot more expensive :P, plus something about making your own work is more rewarding :P

You younger guys have all missed the old days of crankcase breathers. They used to have a metal J-shaped tube the inserted into the valve cover and the other end was open near the bottom of the oil pan. this was before emissions and PCVs.

When I was street racing and pulled up behind a potential 'victim' and that vent tube was puffing blue smoke, I then knew he had bad valve seals and a tired engine, easy mark usually.

If you really want to improve breathing, remember that colder air is often more important than the availible net intake area. Stock port engines in particular. If you can remove the snorkel, make a 3" round to oval adapter to the air cleaner, then run 3" tubing to a cold fresh air source, you will get more benefit.
