aftermarket muffler even worth it?
Besides sounding better, does an aftermarket muffler really offer much power? Racingbeat promises 5hp for their muffler. I have headers and a presilencer. I dont wanna spend the $ on a new muffler, even a cheapo, if it will opnly give 5 hp. Anyone experienced good hp gains when going to an aftermarket muffler?
If you have the header and presilencer but a stock muffler, you're not getting much gain because the muffler is choking the system.
Once you replace the stock muffler with a Racing Beat one you'll not only get the 5hp from the muffler but the 20 or so hp from the header which is sitting there waiting for you to let it breathe

i agree, if you have already invested the money to do part of the exhuast, you should finish it off and get the muffler for another 100-200$, and even if you only get 5hp, thats not bad for 100-200$
Anybody using a rx7.com performance muffler? Friday a guy there said their muffler is made by the same company that makes the RB Power Pulse. Basically the same thing just a different name, BS or what?

Nitsuj - You can make a connector pipe very cheaply using some exhaust pipe, a welder and some flanges.
rotor-lynn - It's tempting to think that those mufflers are the same as the one sold by RB. I've emailed them about this, so when I get a response, I'll post it here.

Cp racing (guru) has some pretty good sturdy thick walled stainless steel mufflers that they get. Sounds pretty good from when i heard his car running...and he says they'd stand up to the rotaries backfirin' ways!

Sumit.com has alot of cheap mufflers. They claim that there muffler will give you a 21hp gain. I need a 3" muffler to put on my piping but i dont really want to spend over $50 on one. I think this one is only about $30. Doy you think it will sound like ****, or should i go ahead and buy it?

Sounds like a bogus claim to me...at least for a 100hp motor. Maybe for a 400hp built small block a set of free flowing mufflers might unleash 20-ish hp. That 20hp for the larger motor is equivalent to a 5hp increase for a 100hp mill. My analysis might be a little too simplistic but I bet it's close.
I was thinking the same thing as Jayne, and then I saw his post, doubtful their claims would be geared toward anything with 4 pistons or less. zero(0) in our case.
Summit is mainly geared to the American muscle crowd. They now have an import catalog, but I think that they and the rest of the business is slowly and grudingly starting to recognize the other side of the Pacific. At least they need to in order to pay the bills.

Many of the claimed gains fom performance parts are not supported by dyno evidence.
Codey's experience of plus 11rwhp is what is to be expected in reality for a RB header and presilencer with a good muffler. The greater improvement comes from the header.
Getting a new muffler will change in order of significance the noise level, the sound, the looks and engine performance. For a street legal muffler the difference between stock and best performance is about 2-3hp at most. The difference in price is primarily due to better material and workmanship.
Cheaper will have a marked difference in life, but quite a few brands are overpriced due to their'reputation'
Louder is not necessarily better accept in attracting the police.
My conclusion is that adding a 'performance' muffler may be justified when its time for a replacement, but not of relative importance if the current one is in good order- unless you need to enhabce your rice status.

I am thinking of getting a aftermarket muffler to replace the factory replacement muffler I got. It seems to have hollowed out from backfire since '99. Also the wields on the shielding around the muffler is cracking up. I've rewielded it several times but doesn't last for too long before I need to tack it some more.
Anyway, I know that lots of people think anything other then racing beat, N1 is not going to last, but I have to disagree when there is no cat in the exhaust. Before I removed them, a cheap muffler DID crack and get loud quickly. But once I hollowed the cats, they don't seem to age very quick.
I am going to hack off the muffler but keep the pipe going to it and wield in a HEAVY walled muffler like a cherry bomb or something else that is heavy built and high flow. Noise isn't a huge concern, I know my current muffler is pretty hollow as it is and its not redicious loud.
However, I am not going with a N1 style one, I hate how ricey those look with the big *** hole. I rather have dual tips like stock so it doesn't stand out. That is relative, I have a bridgeport.

Has anyone tried the Spintech mufflers? Take a look at the diagram on their site at Spintech.com Does this design make sense to you? I talked to a guy that races his RX and it got him under the noise requirement, and that's only with the muffler through headers, no silencer or cat. Can't remember what class he raced, but I think the noise was limited to 95 Db where he was.
The 25hp gain from a mere muffler is obviously rediculos. Although, im still wondering if anyone has tried any of summit.com's mufflers. There cheap, im just wondering if there too cheap?
