affordable aftermarket catalytic converter?

The cats on my '84 GSL are shot; I'm getting a straight pipe but will need to pass emissions in '04. I was wondering about my options today. I know there is a high flow cat for the FC, what about our cars?

I will have a used catalytic converter in a few weeks. It has ~15,000 miles on it. I will no longer need it as my car is becoming a permanent race car. I will be willing to sell it as soon as I have removed it. It replaced the 3 cats on my gsl-se.

Let me know if you are interested

Actually, there is. It's called the Bonez Performance Converter System. It's designed to bolt right up the the original exhaust manifold at the front with the back bolting directly to the connector pipe. Their system consists of a high-flow catalytic converter and a presilencer. It's built tough. Read more about it here.

SL,

The Bonez is well worth the money(if you're not running headers). Mine had an alignment problem but your muffler guy can work around it.

Otherwise,

SUMMIT.

ACTUALLY my GSL-SE has a BOLT ON DYNOMAX SUPER CAT... that TRI-POINT ENGINEERING put for me.... $324.... Bonez is really good.... If you want something different.... MIND TRAIN.... BOLT ON STUFF.... Their situated here in BEVERLY HILLS, CA.... but I think www.rotaryperformance.com has them.... I've seen a BOLT ON PACESETTER CAT before too.... and all the CATS I've mentioned are HIGH FLOW..... I've encountered quite a few due to CA emission standard.... I should have gone with a BONEZ or a MIND TRAIN..... but DYNOMAX has a nice sound to it.....

I got the Bonez cat from Rotary Performance, easy to install, sounds good and certainly cheaper than Mazda direct replacements

My 85 has a Bonez system, per the records it was like 270$ delivered. But it passed later emmision test by a wide margin after it was installed. Much better than the stock setup.

Thanks for all the input, thats why I came back to the 1st gen you guys are the best reference group. I'll probably purchase the Bonez system soon. If I had been thinking I would have bought the Bonez instead of the straight pipe. Now I will have to buy both.

Make sure you don't have any exhaust leak before the CAT.... you could hurt yourself INHALING to much CO.... Use Mazda Quality GASKETS.... nothing cheap.... remember ROTARIES produce a lot of HEAT....
