Question adjusting the idle mixture?

my car is running, but it idles very lope-ee and doesnt like to idle till i have heald the gas for about 30 seconds.
the car has new; cap, rotor, plugs and wires. so im sure its gettin sufficient spark, the carb has been a hassle since the start.
so do i just wait till the car gets warmmed up ad adjust the mix screw till it smooths out?

Need more car specifics to help you out - at first, I ran straight past your post, but came back to ask you to provide more information.

If it's a carb, there are plenty of carb guru's around here; if it's EFI, reply back an the SE guys can help.

Specifics should include;

Year
Model
Miles
Mods
What you've tried
What's wrong
What you think it might be

HTH,

Loping idle is usually caused by a vacuum leak. Check for that first before you mess with carb adjustments.

Also check your ignition timing. This could be off. I actually had that cause a loping idle on my car under certain conditions.

as i said above its a carb., its an s3 engine in a '79 ,
i tried adjusting the timing, and it doesnt really effect it to much. i have jerry-riged the old rats nest to block the vacume ports and provide vacum at needed locations. the only thing i am not sure of is; the previouse owner has removed the butterflies that are inside the intake, it hink thats what they were, and sealed the hole with some kind of plyable putty. I this were leaking would it cause my problem (ide think it wouldnt, or would cause the car to not run at all)
hmm?

thanks for tryin to help

i've got the same problem
when i start the car, unless i keep the accelerator held past around 1500, i usually put it to 3k to warm it up, she will stall

but once she gets past the first line on the temp gauge, the idle is perfect at around 650-700

good luck!

Um, you can adjust it until it smooths out, but the best way is to use a vacuum gauge on the first nipple on the left. Set the mixture for max vacuum. Obviously you'll need a vacuum gauge.

This works for me, though it doesn't seem to put me at the oft-advised 3 to 3-1/2 turns out.
