87 diff/rear end swap into 83

Need a parts/to do list for either swapping just the diff or the entire rear end from an 87 into my 83.

I know the axles are of different sizes, and I believe the pumpkins are different too. I might pick up a set of wheels from the guy as well since my 4 lugs won't work with the 87's hubs.

Wouuld like to do this swap before Monday so any input/help from the TC area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You want to swap an 87 rear end into your 83? Don't mean to offend, but the 87 has independant rear suspension and the 83 has solid axle. No part of the 87's "rear end" is compatible with an 83 without significant modification. We're talking about 2 different generations of RX-7 here where there are very significant changes.

have u ever seen a pic of a 2nd gen rear end and a 1st gen.? If u do ude kno why it would be incredibly hard w/o significant modification.

AFAIK the 2nd gen diff's share almost nothing in common with the 1st gens. The pinion gear shaft is much longer with different bearing size along with the ring gear being bigger I think and the carrier is also not the same.

why even do that swap? get a ford or chevy rear end. A lot easier, beefier and cheaper.

You don't need the strength of a ford rear end unless you're running 300+hp and slicks...

If you want to go 5 lug, get yourself a big bearing LSD rear end and order up the ?Moser? 5-lug axles from ReSpeed.

I don't care about going 5 lug or beefier, I just need a solution to my shattered diff ASAP.

How hard is a ford or chevy swap?

same ur still gonna have to do the mods. Weld on all of the brackets and suspension things as well as possibly shortening the axels to make it fit under the car where it needs to. Custom driveshaft might need to regear it depending if u want stock gearing. Theres alot to do with changeing rears. Ur better off gettin a rear end from some1 on the forums.

To save starting a new thread, how long should a 3rd member swap take?

If you know how, a couple of hours. You have to pull the axles then the 3rd member. Not too tough and a good time to replace the wheel bearings and seals at the same time.
