85 Rx7 project help

Some old lady gave me here 85 GLS. It does not run. put a new battery in it and turn the key and nothing. The starter is out and I am gonna rebuild it. I have no power and tried to push start it and let out the clutch and nothing happend, I just kept on rolling(its was in second gear). Let me know what is wrong with my beast or is it a gonner?

There could be hundreds of things wrong with it. I'll tell you what: You should stop trying to start it until you read some of the "my car won't start threads." You can screw things up if you don't do it right.

I got a new battery and have no lights or nothing. Could it be fuses or bad conections and were would they be? And were can I get a starter selanoid?

There is a fusible link on a box that is connected to the positive battery pig tail. I bet it's blown. Whatever you do, don't fake it. get another fusible link wire and connect it.

I was unable to get a solinoid. I got a rebuilt starter at schucks with a lifetime warrantee. I think our cars go through starters, so get the lifetime one.

Yes, you cant get just a solenoid. If you have no power at all (no dash lights etc), then leave the starter alone. Get some power first. Like cheapie said, check the fuseable links. One is marked main, it may be blown. Its a rectangular, brown plastic unit mounted on the left strut tower. The links are short, u shaped wires that are designed to melt if theres a short to protect the car.

Yeah, be careful trying to start it. You can **** alot of things up that way.

I blew my starter trying to start mine before I knew that the engine was siezed. Yours might be too, and push-starting a siezed engine can blow an apex seal and turn a 5$ fix into a 2500$ rebuild.

1. First thing I would do is try to turn the main pulley of the engine by hand. It should turn fairly freely. If not, that's your first problem - siezed engine. Find one of the threads *I* posted about unsiezing an engine with ATF. I am serious. Don't just take any ATF thread, there are thousands of them, look for one where vipernicus42 (me) posted how I did mine, it's the least harmful way to do the ATF thing.

2. If you can turn the main pulley, pull the spark plugs and give the main pulley six whole turns. From each side you should hear three consistant, strong sounding puffs. If you get sort-of a soft sounding pfffft sound on one of them, you could have a blown apex seal. That means a rebuild. If not, you're good to go, and a lucky-*** bastard that your push start didn't hurt anything.

3. Get power. Make sure the battery's good, and check the fuse box and fusible links. If you need fusibles, grab them off a junker 7 or find someone on the forum close to you who has 'em. Grab a starter off a junker, don't bother rebuilding the starter. Used you can get 'em for like $30, new they cost like $75. Rebuilding isn't worth it.

4. So you have the engine turning, you can hear good compression, and you have power. Time to change the following things:
- Fuel Filter: Do this NOW. 5$, 5min change, lots of headaches solved
- Air Filter - Air + Gas = Explosion which powers the car
- Oil and Oil filter: Don't use Synthetic. This is a big debate here, but hell, non-synthetic is cheaper and you don't have the chance of doing any damage to your engine
- Spark Plugs, Plug Wires, Distributor Cap and Rotor: you need spark to make that air+gas mix explode
- CHECK YOUR BRAKES: my car was sitting 4 years and the brakes were completely, totally, utterly fucked. I needed to change EVERYTHING.
- If your car's been sitting a long time, it's probably a good idea to purge all the old gasoline from the tank and replace it. Old gas turns to varnish, which really, REALLY causes headaches.

If all of that goes well, your car will work. You didn't mention if the car had been sitting, but since you said "some old lady" I assumed it might have been.

Read up on the no-start threads, there's a good one in the FAQ sticky at the top of the page. Hell, read the whole FAQ if you have the time, it's full of LOTS of awesome information that will help you out when working on your FB

Good Luck, welcome to the club
Jon

Look for a junkyard in the Yellow Pages. Maybe one that has imports, but you can never tell. Lot's of parts are available on eBay at low prices, but it takes a couple weeks to get them (I pre-stock spares for my 3 cars from eBay). There are junkyards in California that specialize in disassembling 7s and shipping parts: look on Google.

For parts that must be fresh, I use Mazdatrix and Victoria British, both of which are online and ship real good. And prices are lower than local dealers. In general, 7 parts are pretty cheap compared to other classic sports cars.

And list your needs here. I've picked up a lot of good stuff from other guys in the club. For example, a rebuilt transmission costs $600 around here, but I got one for $200 from a guy near here who rolled his car. And I got another decent one for free. I also got a car for free from another guy here.

you should also think about the fact that when you tried to push start it it kept going you might have a bad trany or clutch.

Yes I do think that the Clutch is shot, that could be the reason it would not push start, I need to get power first. Were can I get fuseable like wire at? Thanks for all the help.
