84 - 83 engine swap

Can anyone tell me if I'm going to run into any problems putting an 84 GS 12a engine into an 83 GSL body. I've noticed that the Emission boxes are different and in different locations. I'm worried that I may have to swap harnesses. If I do, any advice.. Thanks...

Nope, did a '85 to a '83 swap last year, the thing to do is to use the '83 intake/carburetor, rats nets/smog tree. Also use the '83 stock exhaust manifold if you want your exhuast to line up.

Why not use the '84 stuff?
ACV is different, plus some extra plumbing on the carb that the '84 ECU handles, you dont want to deal with that. '84 exhaust manifold is shorter in length.

Very straight forward swap, I live in California which makes life very intresting every 2 years with the DYNO smogII laws.

Swap the engine block, using all of the ancillaries (carb/manifolding/wiring/solenoid rack) from the chassis.

This is a bolt in and go engine change, not a swap. A "swap" would be trying to fit a '79-80 engine in there and make the emissions system work (from either chassis).

Swap:
v. intr.
To trade one thing for another.

v. tr.
To exchange (one thing) for another.

n.
An exchange of one thing for another.

Websters sees it as a swap.

Thanks for all the advice.. I'm glad I asked. I'm going to use the 83 carb and intake.. I'm not sure what you mean by the rats nest/smog tree. Is that the 6 vacuum sensors on the drivers side of the engine? As far as the exhaust manifold, I want to use the entire exhaust from the 84.. It's brand new with headers instead of an exhaust manifold.. Will I have a problem there.. BTW.. I am thinking of using the 5 speed tranny from the 84 as well.. Any issues there...?

afaik the tranny will work and the exhaust as well (although you might have to mix and match hangers) and yes teh smog **** is all those vaccum lines and solenoids on top of the engine next to the carb. good luck.

Webster's isn't a motorhead.

An "engine swap" generally entails at least some form of custom work, be it fabricating new motor mounts, making a new oil pan, having a driveshaft made (or lucking out and through junkyard scrounging finding out that a '72 Frammismobile has *just* the right driveshaft for our combo, never mind that this car had nothing to do with either the new drivetrain or the existing chassis).

If it's a bolt-in, it's not much of a "swap" now is it? No work required.
