84 12a no idle -specific symptoms-really need help!

Ok -idle problem started before I removed emmissions thought I had a vacuum problem, now that rats nest and extra vacuum lines removed problem still exists. Won't idle under 1500rpm -just stalls out. also misses during regular driving and whenever under load. the only time engine sounds right is when choke is pulled and I stomp on gas, then engine sounds normal. I have reinstalled block offplates several times and have a good seal I have replaced nearly every vacuum line and triple checked the instructions from Rx7carl andPratch. the carb is older and not sure if ever rebuilt I am considering rebuilding (with Yaw) but want to be sure this is the problem- also when looking for vac leak engine races when I spray carb cleaner on accelerater pump lever and the back side of the carb(firewall side) from the drivers side reaching over engine, would bad accel pump diaphram cause this? is there some hidden vac outlet at the back side of carb? (ive capped the ones below the accel pump and the others at the base of carb as instructed. So, do I spring for a rebuild or am I missing someting? sorry for length - I promise to help others.

yeah, I would check the ignition stuff...
But also take a look at your jets in the carb.
Mine doesn't stall at 1500 or below but it idles very roughly.... I still havn't found the culprit. :-(

Please keep advice comming- any carb experts out there?

I have replaced plugs, wires, Dist cap and coil for leading plugs - can I hold plug against block and confirm good spark by turning engine over like on a conventional engine? for trailing plugs also? I really don't think its electrical, but i would like to rule it out for sure- Anyone know if accel pump diaphram is bad would it cause these symptoms? (spray carb cleaner on it and egnine seems to react)

You have big vacuum leak grasshopper. If the accel pump dia was bad youd be leaking fuel onto the manifold. There is no hidden vac ports under the linkage crap, however thats where the shutter valve is. Sounds like your leak is right there. You can remove the shutter, make a block off plate and seal the hole. Then tie the stupid butterfly in the open position.

If you need a carb rebuild, there are alteratives. (pssst see my sig).

Now normally I would suggest vacuum leak but it sounds like you have those bases covered. You're description also sounds very similar to a dead leading ignitor as 85gsl2ndtimearound has suggested.

Here's dirt easy test..... start 'er up and pull the leading wire off the leading coil. If there is no change then bingo, it's probably the leading ignitor. Good luck!

this really helps but I have a stupid question exactly which part is the igniter- I'm familiar with the leading coil with wire going to Dizzy which distributes the charge to the lead spark plugs- where is the igniter? thanks ( I will also check the shutter valve.) thanks again

Teh igniters are the little black boxes mounted on the side of teh distributor body, right below the cap.

The ignitor is the 2 small balck box looking things on the dizzy. There is one on front(9o'clock when standing on the drivers side)and one between the dizzy and the alternator (12o'clock When on drivers side). But just like the man that helped me with the same problem, pull the leading wire while its running if there is no change than BAD IGNITOR. Thanks again Bob.
