83' RX7 idle problems

any who...finally got my rx7 back...having problems with it though......im running a 12a in an 83' GSL w 5 speed...anywho the car seems to start nicely with the choke pulled but as soon as it goes in the car dies upon reaching idle...so WTF? it has new gas, plugs, and wires, i timed it the best i could and it still is doing this...? possibly the idler spring on the bottom of the carb? i took the cat off and its not clogged? took the car for a ride and when driving the car drives great, no sputters or anything. Went around a few corners sideway (drift) and was fine. but when i took it around a corner with some g's (no sliding) the car bogged down and wanted to die. got the car home and parked it. car actually idled for about 2 min before it decided to slowly kill itself. so im lost..some help would be appriciated...oh and btw its obvious im new to this thread...but i recently bought the car which sat for about a year before it moved to my house (drove it home). heres some pics of the car.

picked it up for $800.

my other car 93' widebody 240 with SR swap (turbo swap)

i also have vids of this car...but not sure if you RX'ers really care...lol

Sounds to me as though the carb is gummed up from sitting. Have you drained the old fuel, and added fresh fuel? I would also recommend adding some pour thru carb cleaner to the fuel at a stronger than normal mixture, and just drive it. That should help to remove the gummy deposits inside the carb.
Also, check for broken/cracked/disconnected vacuum hoses. Vacuum leaks will cause serious idle problems, even when it seems to run fine anytime other than at idle speeds.

thanks...its about to get some new wheels 17x9.5 and 17x11...deep dish...-25 offset rear 0 offset front...hoping to get this rx project off the ground and get some decent dish wheels and a new paint job on it by spring...thinking about some wantanbe's with nice dish in 16's or 17's. then getting the racing beat header, and doing a custom hks exhaust. dont like the look of the RB exhaust...looks to stock to me...

I couldn't agree more. Yet, there are those who swear by anything with the RB name on it. Think I'll stick with my full stainless 2.25" pipe and muffler on my 83 GS. Been under it at least 2 years, and still has the "new" look.
RB does offer a nice header, but I am underwhelmed with the rest of their system, considering it utilizes the stock pipe for part of the package, unless you pay bigger bucks for the twin pipe setup.

well i tried the carb cleaner about 10 min ago....took the car for a ride and the car is still not idleing. few things i noticed on this trip...car seems to slowly be gaining power every time i drive it. the temp guage dont work on cluster (not sure if its temp sensor related or if its disconnected on cluster)(entire cluster doesnt work properly besides speedo, and battery gauge) the car die on me once during the trip and would not restart (engine was up to temp by this time)...and drifted it around some more, and my car has a nice LSD. anywho...does this make any diff on my diagnosis?

The reason with using the stock connecting pipe is to keep cost down.

Have you tried to adjust the idle speed? I hate to state the obvious, but that's where I'd start. Once you get it so that it will idle, you can get the timing zeroed in.

Definitely sounds like a vacum leak to me. I also have an 83. It has a vacum leak and does not idle. Fires up fine and drives great, just doesn't idle. It may not be the hoses but there could be a leak at the base of the carburetor. Check the whole motor for any type of vacum leak before you try and set the idle because the idle may be correct and you would just throw it off. Check for all vacum leaks before trying to set the idle.
