79 project update

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it ran with the carb rebuild. and it moved. slapped the plates of the van on it and took it around the block with its 1980 dry-rotted flat-spotted tires. it was hella funny, dedomp dedomp dedomp.then right as i got to the driveway it ran out of gas. talk about timing. the exhaust was smoking from just about every flange. you could really tell from the atf, not to mention the atf still liquified that poured out of these spots. but it ran by god. slow, but somewhere.

ok, the problems. i had a maybe inch long spring and a small rod left over after the rebuild. i looked at the haynes and the instructions that came with the kit and could not find it anywhere. all the rods it showed i had in place and all the springs it showed where accounted for. ???????

next, i can't get the idle down under 900. i turned the idle adjustment screw until it seated and that was as low as it would go. i still need to work on tuning the mixture as the kits method had it running super rich. it would backfire a few times after you revved and let off the gas.

thats all i can think of right now. i'm still not awake. in bed at 3:30 at work at 8:00. zzzzzzzzzz. anyway, IT RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can also adjust your idle with the nuts that hold the accelerator cable to the carb bracket. Loosen both sides and pull it back and forth, you'll see what I mean if you've got the engine running when you do this. Post pics of your leftovers. Verbal description ain't gonna cut it, amigo...

yeh, gotta get the digicam for the pics. i was think about that earlier. i wondered if i had the throttle cable etc to tight. i 'm notorious for pushing precision. no slack in the cable so i can gas mad quick.

Were the parts left over from the kit or from the carb? If it was from teh kit...no big deal...lots of kits come with extras or parts for other years, etc. If it's orignal...well...if it runs, screw it.

your idle problem probably has something to do with the choke or throttle cable,
try disconnecting them one at a time to see if its the problem,

if it is then dont forget to readjust the idle mixture screw

Isn't that how it always is, bolts and parts left over lol

I am sure that when I put my car back together this weekend I will have at least 1 extra bolt...

every guy here that works on cars here tells me that if you have **** left over then you did it right. and the parts "i believe" were off the carb.

Id try adjusting the dashpot at the rear of the carb, it will hold the throttle lever down... If over adjusted
