79 with a lot of Oil in Exhaust

All,

Just bought '79 RX7 white, great body 70K original! Been sitting for 12 years in southern Illiois, brought it back to Chicago. Owner told me it blows white smoke, thanks to everyone here am reasonably sure it is the oil rings since it has been sitting so long, could be worse, wont know til I open her up. He also said there is alot of oil coming out of the tailpipe. I dont want to run it in case it is the apex seals. What is a typical cause of spewing tons of oil from pipe?

Used to own 86 GXL, god I miss that car!

Thanks!!!
Loco

oil out of the tailpipe is extreme. bad apex seals wouldn't lead to that. it sounds like the oil seals are totally shot! however, i'm tempted to ask if the pan was overfilled. hmmm ...

either way, tell us what you find. and good luck.

Yeah I'd give a better description of what's happening as you try and crank it. If it's blowing white smoke from the exhaust then it sounds like rebuild time as the coolant seals are gone. Looks like one clean SA. I too like the wheels and get more pics!

I have a 1977 Rotary Pickup with the same condition. I can get it running with starting fluid and it will idle some what, but the ground below the mufflers will be saturated with oil. I'm thinking oil seals.

Ouch. I was hoping someone had an answer about the oil out of the exhaust. Please remember we are a community that helps each other. Not to put each other down.

Thanks,

I cant figure out if the rims are orignal or not. Never seen them on a 7. I think the oil rings are the cause for the white smoke since it's been sitting for a dozen years. . The heavy oil is the one that scares me. Do you need a complete rebuild for the oil seal replacement or can they be fixed otherwise?

I will take some pics from underneath as soon as I get it in the garage. It was undercoated and looks incredibly clean. Undercoating really pays off if done right!!!

It is a beautiful car!! Great shape, and nice rims. Im not sure, oil is actually coming out of the exhaust? That's a new one on me. Just a side question: smoke on startup is normal, right? I can never remember!

tricky word, "normal", but i'll say it depends on color, duration and condition of your engine.

If oil is in the tailpipe it's rebuild time. oil belongs in the motor.

Oil in the tailpipe come from 2 sources. Too much pre-mix, unlikely at this point for either of you. and worn oil control rings. Fixing the problem requires a full rebuild.
