79 12a Gokart project

Hey, I recently got a 1979 12a that i tore down and am rebuilding for a school project (gokart). It has the stock 79 dizzy and was wondering if there was any simple way to wire up this ignition (I’ve heard of replacing it with electronic but am unsure if i really need to).

The 79 points dizzy wiring would be the easiest. Switch to the 1981-1985 electric dizzy would make it perform a little bit better but is a little more wiring but doable.

You would need the 1981-1985 dizzy with ignitors and if possible the dizzy wiring pigtail sub harness.

I’ll stick with the points then. does anyone have a simple wiring diagram for it? I’ve looked at the wiring diagrams for it and they all seem a bit overly complicated for what I’m trying to do

This is it. It really is pretty simple. The sub harness is also simple and a stand alone piece. The stuff like ignition switch to coil power and tach are already in place.

Forgive me…I’m not very skilled in this sort of thing. I was under the impression from the original ‘79 ignition system that it didn’t have igniters?

The diagram I posted is the 1985 used for the conversion to the electric dizzy.

the 79 use the J105 igniters but was a points style ignition. the electronic ignition did away with the points and used the J109 igniters. and i think the (diamond)coils were also different from the points version.

79's did not have any ignitors, strictly a dual points setup. 1980 is when they went electronic with the ignitors mounted on the underside of a box on the inner fender. In 81 they began mounting them on the dizzy itself. I have also read that the coils are different from 79 to 80. Don't remember the reason right off.
