12A Drop In....

We have an 82 7 that has no engine, tranny or driveshaft.

Will a 12a from any of the 1st gen years work as far as bolting up and having the wiring harness hook up? or does it have to be a certain year 12A?

Thanks,
Mike

Not a factor. Lets keep it simple. Any 12a 79-85 will do the job.

As long as you source a carb and intake as the same year as the body, it's a direct drop in. If you remove the rats nest and emmisions, any year of 1st gen 12A works. As far as installing an SA engine, particularly the 79, it will need a later dizzy.

Thanks guys

I know a ton about the FC as that is mostly what I deal with and own 4 but this is our first FB.

So any 12a will work but the 79 model can have a few issues I guess. So stay with 80 to 85?

Thanks,
Mike

What Trochid is stating is that if you got a complete 79 motor including dist/rats nest. Then you would need to just drop in a later model dist which goes straight in. And the rats nest and carb needs to match the wiring for the car. Which means basically a carb from 81-85 would work. The earliers have some differences. But if the rats nest was not used then any carb 79-85 would work.

What blwfly meant to say is that all 79-85 12a's will work.

Wiring is different I learned that. I think 84-85 has the main harness going in on the passenger side all other years it goes in on driver side.

Yeah, my concern was the wiring which ours does come in on the drivers side I believe.

Anybody know a good place to find a 12a?

That depends entirely on what you want and your budget. Check the 1st gen parts for sale section, I believe there are a couple in there for sale now. When buying used, it's best to be able to see/hear/drive the engine while it's still in the car, that's not always an option.

You can post a wtb in the parts section also. What are your goals and intended use for the car? Are you looking for a stock replacement engine, used/fresh rebuild, stock or ported, etc.?

Fwiw, the 1st gen engines are much simpler to troubleshoot and repair than the 2nd gens, I have both. Once you get your's put together and the suspension/brakes up to par, I think you will be very pleased with the handling. Not only can they be upgraded to out handle your TII, they can also be setup to smoke a stock TII in straight line performance. It's only a question of time and money.

Well the car already has a suspension setup on it for autox...not from us but the previous owner did it.

Right now we just want a stock 12a to drop it so it's a running car then worry about mods later on down the road. Just tired of it sitting when all we need is a motor and tranny for it to be back on the road.

I love the look of the car as it's in awsome shape for an 82 so just excited to see it on the road and drive it.

I did the WTB but nobody has said anything but I will keep an eye out and maybe one will show up soon.

Depending on your budget, I probably have enough parts to build you a fresh engine. Are you subject to emissions where you're at? If you're interested in a fresh engine, PM me and we'll se what we can work out. If you're not in a hurry, the 1/2 bp will be coming out of the widebody in a few months, for the TII swap. I has about 3k miles on it and I have nothing else that I want to put it in.

PM sent!

So far I haven't had much luck finding a motor for it. Our local junkyard does have what looks to be a 79 RX-7 mostly complete just doing nothing with a complete drivetrain but haven't looked at it seriously yet.

If they don't want much for the engine, pull it to use as a core exchange. Be sure to get the carb and intake too.
