4 or 5 qrts of oil

I just changed the oil for the first on an 84 rx7 with 1.1?. The book says 5.5 qrts of oil with filter, 4.4 qrts without the filter. I changed the filter and completely (so I thought) drained the pan and after 4 qrts. the stick reads full. What's up with that?

I haven't had a 12a in a while, but if I remember right, they only took about 4 quarts? In any case, drive it around a little and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Then check it warm. That's the point when you're supposed to read the stick.

I put 4 in my 12a well over a week ago, its still full everytime I check it.

The haynes manual says 5... I dont know why it only takes 4. There couldnt have been a quart of old oil left in the system when I filled it, the oil is still a nice clean golden color. If there was a quart of old oil left in there it would have mixed with the new stuff by now and turned it pretty dark.

someone should find out whats going on...

Remember, the rotors are hollow and full of oil for cooling.

One quart of old oil in 4 of clean will not make it that dark...

When I change oil, I always disable the ignition and crank it for a few sec... That's how you get that extra quart out.

I also crank it when I fill it back up...

sounds like Pele' may be on target. Being a former piston only kinda guy, I'm having a difficult time thinking rotary and not piston. My reason for concern is I understand oil is paramount to a healty rotary engine, I come to this conclusion because of the oil cutoff switch mounted on the oil pan. Well, I'm certainly not going to drain the oil just to find the answer, it will wait till the next oil change.

Thanks,

so I need to crank it when there is no oil in the pan to get the extra quart out? do I need to do anything other than just unhooking the ignition before doing this? Should I unplug the coils or what?

Ill give that a try next time I change my oil, although that wont be for a while yet...

I personally fill up the oil filter with oil and it takes a little over 1/2 quart. Cover the hole, invert fast and install. After doing it for over 15 years, I can say I am a PRO....no spill

I never start a car without oil in the filter.
