3rd brake light from FC & roll pan

I plan on doing both these mods at the same time. They both should be pretty easy/straight forward. Does anyone want me to do a "how-to" of sorts or should I just show a quick easy before/after pic?

BTW, yes I understand the safety concerns with the roll pan - which is why (partly) that I am also planning on doing the 3rd brake light swap from an FC.

Looking out my window at the back of both the FC and FB, the FB has a roll pan, the FC doesn't. Not sure what you mean by adding a roll pan to an FB.

I think he means removing the bumper, and filling the void with an insert of some sort, plastic or metal. The extra brake light would lessen the chance of being rear ended. Of the 4 Rx-7's I've driven over the years, 2 have have been rear ended. The bumper/shocks prevented damage. In a 3rd incident, a lady actually bumped me trying to nudge me out into the intersection so she could turn left before the light turned red, (or after it turned red). When she tapped me, I looked in the rear view, and she's motioning me to move forward, what a moron. I wanted so bad to put it in reverse and set off her air bags.

Removing the rear bumper and rolling the rear end was on of the body mods I considered while installing the wide body kit. I found a couple pics of 1st gens that had that mod. To me they looked just wrong. Didn't fit the body lines. Now shortening the bumper protrusion might work and would look much better. I almost did that when I installed the SA bumpers, but didn't have enough time to do it.

In my case, it would have to be done front and rear. In Ian's case, he already has the front modded so it might work just shortening the rear bumper.

Btw Ian, where are you planning on installing the 3rd brake light? If you could mold it into the roof line just above the hatch window, it might be kinda sharp looking. If I were to do it on the wide body, it would probably look best centered at the bottom of the whale tail wing. But I think a long line of led lights across the bottom of it like the old Cadilllacs had would look the best.

I previously deleted the hatch lock assembly so I would basically put it where it was (essentially where it is on an FC - right in the middle).

Yes by roll pan I mean to remove the rear bumper and weld in a pice of sheet metal where the "indent" is to make the rear of the car "smooth".

Also coming soon is my car repainted - and it wont be yellow........ DUN DUN DUN....

lol

Here is a pic (the first post) of what I am talking about.

As far as the paint I wont say any more other than it will have large amounts of pearl in it - both colors...

OK OK I cant say any more as it will then ruin the surprise.

Sooo, what is the general concensus on different taillights on an FB? Im thinking if I can cut off the hole for the 3rd brake light from an FC what if I just remove the taillight sections as well? Opinions on this? Anyone know if the angles of the corners are close enough to work?

A how-to write-up is always welcomed. I've seen a few of these roll pans (on 7s) only in pictures, and I really like the look. However, the lack of any real protection is a downfall. What about shortening the shocks and keeping a modified bumper cover? I gotta admit, though, that in the end sometimes aesthetics can outweigh the function.

If anyone has any ideas on a good way to reinforce the *** end of an FB and still have a roll pan please feel free to mention it. Even if you think its a dumb idea, it may trigger a better one from someone else.

Susquehanna Motorsports! ahrrrrg!
You have to be old, and have watched Abbott and Costello over and over.

I like the idea, if you could fab something that stuck out about two inches, and matched the lines of the car (better than the factory bumper does) it would look great.
Something thin, and strong, like carbon fiber.
I've always wanted to make SA composite bumpers, but also like the streamline look of the 81-85.
