2GDFIS Question

I just got a second gen coil. I'm thinking of doing the swap to 2GDFIS now. My car is an 83 w/ a streetport 12A holley setup.

I'm looking at getting the Summit Racing Street & Strip Multi-Spark Digital CD Ignition (SUM-850602) in the near future. Would it be hard to convert to this setup after I've done the 2GDFIS setup? Can I use the second gen leading coils with the summit setup? This setup will only be for the leading, trailing will stay stock.

Thanks for the help.

DLIDFIS uses two coils and two ignitors. Sound like you want to use 2GCDFIS which uses one 2nd gen coil and one ignitor or MSD or similar CD box.

Edit to main post done

I don't know anything about the Summit Racing system you were talking about though... I haven't heard anything about it.

The 2nd Gen coil is a good swap. There are FCs running High-boost high-horsepower motors still using the stock ignition. They were marvelously over-engineered, they don't make 'em like that anymore! Well maybe they do, but in any case they rock.

Doing 2GDFIS with just the coil is good, with the "Transistor Trick" box is better (search it up, there's a monster thread on it) and with an ECU is even better. Problem with the ECU is that if you're not FI, you don't usually want to pay for a "fuel and ignition" control computer when you only need the ignition control.

I say mount the 2nd gen coil and go from there.

Oh, so it's basically an MSD, but with "Summit Racing" written on it.

That's cool. If you look up info here on people using MSD boxes (like the 6A or 6AL) then you'll probably find info that will apply to that.

Thanks
At far as I can tell it hooks up about the same as the MSD. There has been I lot of talk using this box.

One thing I'm still wondering is the FC coil good with a box like the MSD or summit or should I use 2 blaster coils? I would like to save money and use the FC coil but are the blaster coils more powerful.

I've been wondering the same thing. In the past I was running a MSD with a MSD DIS coil. It was tops, but I want to find a cheaper solution. So I've been considering the FC coil with my MSD. I haven't done any research on running the FC coil at all, but I'm sure it can be done. Maybe a FC coil, a MSD, and a transister trick, or what ever that is.

I agree with viper. The 2nd gen coils are extremely superior. As a matter of fact, all the people that I have talked to, especially RX-7 doc, say that the aftermarket coils, yes, even the MSD's, do not hold a strong enough spark throughout the entire RPM range when compared to the stock 2 gen coil.
