278k?
So, my FC died. Need a running car.
No money, no job yet, no public transportation and slim chance of my parents lifting a finger.
There's a Rotary guy locally who has two cars he'd even trade me for.
1.) 1982 RX-7 278k on the chassis/tranny.
2.) 1991 Geo Storm Wagonback Automatic. 214k, lots of new parts, runs really really well.
The Geo runs seriously well. There's a slight amount of damage to the passenger headlight eyebrow, but no biggie. The interior, on the other hand, is extremely cheap. The dash is cracked, carpets badly stained, seat torn and stained, plastic interior trim cracked or broken and there's zero stereo. It's 90hp coupled to a 3-speed automatic.
Speedometer is uselessly broken and I think I only got it up to 45..maybe 50.
The RX-7 we couldn't get started. There was no gas in it, and the battery was literally flat. He's going to get it running this weekend so I can come drive that, too. The chassis/tranny has 278k on it, but the front housing has a factory rebuild stamp. He bought the car for the motor, originally. So let's say the motor was rebuilt at 100k...that means it's got 178 on it now. Not that bad?
The body is decent. The passenger tail needs to be replaced. The front bumper bondo was done poorly, but the paint (Silver champagne-ish color) was done some years ago and could be waxed to look pretty damn nice.
The top dash, I regret to inform you, has been spray painted by the P.O. That STONE look and feel paint, and the dash has become cracked.
I do need something I can somewhat depend on for a few months...
Discuss.

178k on the motor isn't terrible. If it runs great and you can trade a dead FC for a aged and worn but decently running FB do it!
Then again what did happen to the FC that you can't fix it?

Well, if you need to rely on it as your only transportation for a few months, I would say go for the geo, its got excellent fuel mileage and in my experience they are very reliable. The only thing you gotta watch out for is the #3 cylinder, they tend to go before the rest and you gotta do some adjusting to keep compression, although my sister drove hers for about 5 months running on only 2 cylinders! Whatever you choose I hope you get a good solid car.

Worry about the car before you start trying to get a new shift ****. I still run the stock shift **** and it works just fine.
For someone who has no job, no money, you need to worry about getting a solid running car first.

N.O.I., but did you not read my post? I said I've GOT a Miata **** I'd like to use. Meaning, I've had it for a while now and it requires no more money than getting in the car and sneezing.

Go for the FB, if it runs and drives pretty good, should be fine, maybe just refrain from too many 7k shifts, even though you gotta sometimes My FC had 215,000 when I pulled it and it ran just fine, it had just lost a step, but still pretty quick

love the braaaap
I'd say find out what the RX-7 is like first, then depending on the condition of that car decide between the two. Sounds like the geo would never pass a safety inspection without the speedo working. Personally I would never drive a car without a working speedo. As for the RX-7, chances are if the engine was rebuilt it was done well after 100K, probably more like 200K as those engines tend to last about that long. That leaves about 78K on the rebuild, which is low for a 12A engine when you consider they average between 180K and 250K.
