2 down 98 to go...

problems that is.
hi, all. yes its me again with another question...
ever since i bought my car it has been running rich, but never seemed like a problem other than bad gas mileage. About 2 weeks ago I went from 93 octane to 87, because of a thread i read last year.
thats the only thing I've done different in the last month or so, which prob has nothing to do with the problem. And my car is a 85 GSLSE with about 173k miles. Original, dont know but sure hope so.
Anyways, my problem is that, in the morning my car would start, not like usual but its cooler now, so i thought that might have something to do with it. So ill let it warm and rev it for a while to get the garbage out or take it for a drive. Then id come home, park it and any where from 30 mins to 2 or 3 hrs later ill come out and crank it, and nothing. It would crank but wouldnt turn over.Damn. it sounded like it was flooded, and after a few mins cranking and hitting the gas pedal, if it wasnt flooded now it is. Ima have to get me a real car(civic), just kidding.
But, then ill just let it sit come later and it would turn over right away. Ok so I would let it warm up, take for a "spirited" drive, come home, turn it off, turned it back on fine. leave it on for a while and then shut it off. Next few days, till now, same thing. It starts fine, then it wont. And after sitting for a while it would turn over, and the it wouldnt.
No, im baffled as to what this could be, since then Ive changed the spark plugs and charged/trickled the battery. Hell even if i tried jump starting the damn thing it wouldnt turn over.
I need my car backhavent driven it in a week. I have to use my dads pick up, which for some reason doesnt have any(pick up, that is) or my sis corolla. I need my car back pls.
thanks.

The GSL-SE have a tendency to flood when not FULLY warmed up. It's a glich in the computer. Mine does it once in a blue moon. To remendy the situation and to save my a$$ from getting under the hood, I installed an 12v electrical switch on the hot wire to the fuel pump. When it floods I turn the switch off and then it starts up nice and quick and then I flip the switch back on...

BTW: It's makes a good security feature as well. Turn it off when you get out. NO GAS, NO GO

If thats whats wrong with mines, then i dont know why. The first time that really bothered me was when i drove for like 30 mins, my guess is that it should have warmed up by then. I get to my friends house and parked it. Like 1.5 hrs later I come out and it wouldnt turn over. So i have to jump with him. Not bad considering who i have to sit next to, but not a comfortable ride. So like 5 hrs later we get back. And on the first try, it turns over. Thats why im puzzled. When it has happened at home Ive taken out the plugs and they have gas but not soaked in it. And it does it constantly. And i always make sure its warmed up. When im putting it in the driveway after being sitting on the street for a while. I warm it up for a couple of minutes the take it aroud a couple of blocks then park it in the driveway.
but ill look into rigging a switch, just in case thast the prblem.
thanks

OK, so i have the same problem, different situation. So, my car now deosnt want to start in the morning, but turns on in the afternoon. Could this have anything to do with the battery being old, not enough cranking amps. Or something with the cold start system, if theres one??

Question A bit confused

Not sure what you mean when you say "it cranks, but won't turn over."
To me "cranking," and "turning over," mean the same thing....That is that the starter is spinning the engine.

On occasion, now that it's Winter finally, I experience a starting problem. My SE will start right up immediately after a cold night off, but now and then, if I'm running from store to store for example, it will not catch (fire up) immedeately. What I do is floor the pedal and spin 'er over. In a few seconds I can hear/feel 'er wanting to fire and I release the key. She'll put on one rotor for a moment, then the other rotor will catch and she'll rev up, producing a bunch of smoke indicating a flooded condition. This behavior is a cold weather condition that doesn't happen when the outside temp is above 40 degrees. I never spin the starter for longer than 5 or 6 seconds when she's in this state. If she won't catch, I wait several seconds, turn the key and floor the gas. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 times before she'll catch and fire up...

Hope this helps,
Denny, from the 'ol corncrib...

By crank, i mean that the starter is turning or trying to turn the engine. And turn over, when it starts and I let go of the key.

So in other words, i will be, sorta flooding the engine. ok. I never really wanted to step on the gas pedal, casue of that. Id have to give it a try.

Thanks

One other piece of info....Sometimes when I'm making various stops around town when I start 'er back up I'll press on the gas a bit when I first turn the key...

Always make sure that you have a fully charged battery. With the SE you may be having injector problems. If the injectors are leaking it will cause your problem. What happens is the fuel system remains pressurized after you turn off your car, this is normal. But if your injectors are leaking, the fuel will drip out of the injectors down into your engine. Thereby creating a flooded condition. This may not be the problem, but it is a possibility.

Thanks everyone, i think i finally got the problem fixed.(crossing fingers) I replaced a water temp sensor, and everything seems to be working properly now. So, keep that in mind, just in case you run into the same problem.
