2 cycle timming light/standerd timming light

why is it that if i use a brand new blue point timming light my timming is off alot. but i used a mac timming light that i could put on 2 cycle and my timming is right? both are diggy lights.... so do you have to have the timming light on 2cycle? for it to get the wright timeing? or is there a trick to reading the marks with a standerd timming light?

witch 1 is right

Did you hook them both up identically ? Are they both just inductive where you clamp over the spark plug wire ? Maybe the blue point is picking up noise.

I have an old sears (I think) timing light and I stick it on the 1st rotors leading plug wire (its inductive pickup) and it works fine. Maybe the blue point is bad ?

yeah they where both hooked up identically they both hooked up the same... they both also told RPM and the blue point was way off said something like 6k

the blue point is new the 7 was the 1st car it was used on..... it didint have an adjustment to put it on 2 cycle tho didint see where you could change it to 4 cyl either

The newer digital timing lights have a tach, and advance wheel to them. These items will only work correctly on a Rotary if they have a 2 cycle/4cycle setting.
Piston engines only fire once every other rotation. Hence, 4 cycle (4 stroke).
Rotaries fire every rotation, just like a 2 cycle (2 stroke) engine.
Using an antique timing light is always easy, as they just light up when they get the signal. No computer to screw things up.

I guess I'm using antique tools. DOH! Does that mean I'm an antique as well?

LOL, it just means you don't need a PHD in computer programing, before making a simple adjustment on a car that most people with PHD's cannot comprehend........
