1st Gen. w/ AC & power steering-
1st Gen. w/ AC & power steering-
So exactly how rare is a 1st gen. that has both AC and power steering?? I was under the impression Mazda never made a car that had both-it was one or the other. Curious as to how many couldve been made??
thanks-

i think all of the models except the gs and s have power steering, they all have AC...many people just chose to remove it...I can speak for the S, there is no power steering..but i do have AC

GSL-SE would have both, I believe it was an option on the other models, GSL, GS, S. However my GSL has neither AC nor PS. All the cars came with the AC condenser under the dash.
My buddy Sean's SE has both. Neither of my S's have PS but both have AC. FBsliderseven, PS is overated, I'll take a manual steering car over PS. At least until I start getting old and decrepid LOL

My understanding is that the GSL-SE was the only model that came with power steering on it and it only came as a option. My 82 GSL does not have power steering nor did my 81 GS.
Air conditioning was standard on GSL and GSL-SE models only. GS and S models air was a option.

It is like this:
- for A/C, only the GSL-SE has it standard. It was an option for all other models, but a common option. My understanding is that the GSL-SE was the only one to have the AC installed at the facotry. The others were installed at the port or the dealer.
- for P/S, it was an option for GSL and GSL-SE. Pretty sure that P/S wasn't available until the 84-85 models.
My GSL-SE has both options. I have seen other SEs with manual steering, but I think the manual steering was less common (people paying for all the other options with getting an SE, so might as well get P/S too). The only other option on the SE was the leather package. Too bad that you couldn't get the grey interior w/ leather. Mine has the grey cloth interior. Also, no automatic transmissions in the SEs.

I didn't think about it, but you may be right about PS not being an option until the S3 model. It's not listed in the 83 FSM, is listed in the 85 edition.
I too am disappointed they didn't offer leather in gray, which was also the lowest produced S3 color, yet, imho, it was the best looking color and held up better over time than the wine and brown

Yep. I'm pretty sure that is was an S3 only option. I like the p/s in general. I do have a leak somewhere in mine, so I lose all the P/S fluid. Then I have to muscle it. I think it is in the return like or in the reservior itself. Don't see any leaks on the high pressure lines.
Yes. The grey holds up amazingly well. The wine/maroon just fades and tuns all sorts of colors. With the grey, I just have some fading on the carpet, but that's about it. As far as no leather in grey, who knows? It was the 80's. I'm sure that everyone was drooling over that maroon interior back then.
Edit:
You can see the 84/85 sales brochure here: http://www.jimrothe.com/mazda/brochures/index.html
It'll tell what's an option and what isn't. I'm sure there are some earlier brochures floating around, but can't remember the site. www.iluvmyrx7.com had a lot of cool stuff, but they aren't around anymore.

I have a GSL-SE w/ A/C, Leather, and manual steering. I like the manual steering, but for me this is a recreation only car. If it was a DD then P/S might be more attractive. But as these cars age it's only one more thing to go wrong.

I've only ever saw California GSL's with power steering. And its really not worth it.
Mine never works when you want it too, and sometimes it works when you dont. Its really just a waste of weight, time, energy, engine space. Unless your arms are made of jelly, theres really no point to it.
