Welcome to the forum.

Open the door, and take a look on the door frame, there should be a decal that give the curb weight of the car in stock trim.

I can't remember what door it is on, but there are only two so its not too hard.

Best of Luck

The "Beyond the Redline" site has a lot of data under the "Model Info" link. The 1981 model weighs 2345 pounds... the later GSL-SE weighs even more. I've seen these numbers on other sites as well....

It doesn't specify if the weights are dry or wet. (If there is no fluid (oil, gas, etc) in the car or not. 2600 is pretty heavy compared to the other trim models Guess I gotta add some lightness.

Just throw a nice block of upsydaisyum in your trunk

(anyone who watched Rocky and Bullwinkle show when they were kids know what I'm talking about.... Upsydaisyum is the only element known to man that "falls upwards".... there isn't much on earth because it all fell into the sky eons ago :P)

The weight in the door jam is fully total vehicle capacity. In other words, it's the most weight you should load your car with. It's far more than the normal weight of the car.

Stock the GSL-SE is supposed to weigh 2610, but I weighed mine with a full tank of gas and it weighed 2440. I used a scale at a rock quarry to weigh my car and it seemed to weigh a little high. The scale told me I weigh 170 when I really weigh 180.
My car does not have a/c, spare tire, radio, or the jack.

I have long wondered about the published 1st Gen weight specs. How can the Curb Weight for a 5 speed model be listed at 2,345 lbs, and the GSL-SE swell by almost 250 pounds to 2,590 lbs? The engine isn't THAT much larger; the other -SE items don't seem to be parts that would contribute to a weight increase.

My '80 weighs 2300 lbs. with 3/4 tank of gas in the car.

I'm pretty sure that the SE's tranny, struts, brakes, wheels, and rearend are all heavier than the SA/FB, not to mention the 13B and it's extra electronics, fuel injection, oil cooler, etc. There's actually quite a bit of stuff contributing to the weight difference.

And the series 1 (SA in the USA) are a bit lighter than the 83 GSL.

Yeah, I read the 1978 model weights 1009kg or 2225lbs with all fluids and a spare tire and jack, But without any fuel or repair tools. That's Light!
Ah, But 65 Liters of fuel is about 100 pounds.. the 78/80 had 55L which is 88 pounds.

The GSL will always be heavier. Came with Cruise, Power windows, Removable moonroof, Rear wiper. Disk brakes all around and the 2-way LSD (don't think that made it heavier though). Optional Power steering, A/C and the 4 speed auto. Plus the other options like leather seats/steering wheel, EQ stereo, etc.

I just pulled a 83 GSL rear end off my donor car and I'm going to swap it with my 84 GS rear. I'm gonna weight them both and see what the difference is. One is the small wheel bearing and the other is the large. Basically making a GS-L car with all the fat trimmed and still look stock :P The Leather wrapped wheel would be nice and the seats to match.

I too am curious what my 83' GS weighs. I have A/C and a sunroof. My understanding is that A/C adds 50 lbs and the sunroof adds a negligible amount of weight and does not hurt chassis rigidity. I can't imagine there is much weight difference between a GS and a GSL, but perhaps I'm mistaken. I'd like to remove A/C since mine does not work, and the weight savings is significant.

For whatever reason, I was under the impression that the S1 cars weighed more than the S2 cars as a result of the steel bumpers. In comparison to other small sports cars from the time period, it looks like the RX-7 weighs a tiny bit more than the AE86, tiny bit less than the AW11 MR2, bit more than the 1.6 Miata and around the same as the 1.8 Miata. All these cars are in the 2,200-2400 lb range.

Put some helium tanks in your trunk it'll help.

I weighed my 79' a few years ago at a scrap yard at 2250#s. I was in it with a few gallons of fuel.

I thought the SAs were heavier due to full size spare and heavy bumpers. Not to mention the 30 pound flywheel and thermal reactor exhaust.

Makes sense... I had a strait pipe, no spare and an FC engine in mine. With NONE of those pesky fuel tank baffles weighing me down.

I may be overthinking it, but what is the consensus on removing the spare? Does this make the car front heavy or really have any discernible effect?

its negligible, its less than 25lbs, and it is in the back where you want it.

we've learned from racing that it is better to have good weight distribution than it is to have less weight, although it might depend on what you're doing.

our example is a spec E30 BMW, which is an 80's 3 series with a cage and modest suspension, its a fun class because the cars are easy to build and the competition is close.

the minimum weight for the class when we ran one, was 2750lbs with driver. the weight distribution of these things is like 60/40 because the BMW engine is easily 1000lbs.

our car weighed in at 2550lbs, with driver, so for the actual race we put #200lbs of weight in the trunk.

you'd think adding 200# would make the car much slower, but it was actually the same, because the improvement in weight distribution more than offset any penalty in a straight line...
