The fact is the the non-SE weight is an average of sorts between the various models and many of them came to the US without AC (so AC is not included in the weight for the most part). The AC systems in the 12A cars were typically installed at the port or by dealers. All of the SEs came with factory installed AC, so that is included in the weight.

If you put an S3 GSL (with AC) on the scales and then a GSL-SE with the same options, you'll find the weight difference to be almost nill. You have to remember that a GSL is really the same thing as the GSL-SE with the exception of the engine. There are other small differences (like bigger brakes), but these differences are very small. For instance, the GSL-SE has larger brake rotors, but the GSL-SE is vented on all 4 wheels where the GSL discs are solid on the rear. Wheels are larger on the GSL-SE, but I doubt they are really any heavier (and the difference would not be significant to the total weight of the car if there is a difference there).

If you are going to compare the weights on the cars, you need to compare apples to apples. There is a big difference between the S and a loaded GSL in terms of weight, but not much difference between a loaded GSL and a GSL-SE. Plus, you got a signicant increase in power, torque, and a wider powerband with those few extra pounds on the GSL-SE model. If you are wanting light, start with a basic S model and go from there.

Edit: Also the S3 GSL and GSL-SE could be had with or without power steering.
I have owned 2 gslse's without factory air conditioning.

May have been an option for Canadian verions. I know it was standard in the US market, though.

Thanks for digging that info up. I didn't know that a thread was started on this subject, already. Were the front assemblies from a 12a model, or an se? I have an 85 gsl, but I'm doing an se suspension swap. I know that the se suspension is a little beefier, with the front having a larger spindle diameter and the rear with bigger axle shafts.
