I don't know how long it's been since that thread's been updated (I'll check it later) but my top 5 performance improvements would be
1. Sterling Nikki (carb)*
2. RB Street Port Exhaust
3. ReSpeed Steering Rack
4. Springs and shocks to taste**
5. Sumitomo HTR200 tires***
* Along with a good fuel pump such as the Mallory Comp 70 or 110, or the Holley or Carter pumps, and a fuel pressure regulator like the Holley 1-4PSI FPR
**I run RB springs / KYB shocks, others have run Eibach/Tokico, and now there's the awesome new ReSpeed Coil-Over set
***for S, GS, GSL rims, available at tirerack.com. For the -SE there are better choices
Of course there are plenty of little things that always need to be done on cars before you really get out the performance, and you should never neglect things like brakes and suspension in favour of go-fast mods. Build a solid base first, address your breaking and suspension, then go for the go-fast goodies.
Have fun!

That ought to keep it fun stock for a little while if you are used to driving piston engine cars
A sterling would be nice, but being that he is taking time from building, i would try to find a weber sidedraft paired with a street port exhaust, i have had good times with an eibach pro-kit and tokico blues, get a set of stainless steel brake lines from mazdatrix.com, if you go turbo search a thread done by "moremazda" about 6 or 7 years ago he spells out everything you'll need to do a 12a turbo blow through system. If you plan on doing that route later get yourself a good fuel pump and FPR now and find an electric fan with a thermostat that flow 2500CFM or more ( depending on how hot your summers are. Good luck.

I suggest you take it out on the autocross course first in stock form.
I take my FC out sometimes and have a several thousand dollar Coilover setup, full exhaust, and R-Compound tires... And I get beaten by stock CRXes.
Upgrade the main part of the car... You.
