1983 Gsl
I dont' really want to be a post *****, but I do want to find out everything I can about my new car.
I'm wondering how much I should pay the guy for it.
It's a 1983 (maybe 84? I have it at a friend's house right now, I'll check later) GSL. It has a primer job right now. Louvers on the back window. All electronic devices work fine, including the CD player he put in. Needs a right fender and some work on the body where I hit my friend's truck towing it to his house (damn picky brakes).
Front windsheild cracked across, but coated with that stuff that keeps it from breaking in on itself.
Moonroof works fine.
All mirrors, lights, everything intact.
Original Carb. Needs a new carb or carb rebuild.
Engine possibly not working. I'll find out when I put the carb on.
Tires, brakes, and rims are brand new. Brand new starter. Brand new Fuel Pump. Cherry rims that could be sold.
Interior is in great condition. A few cracks, and the handle to close the driver side door is broken, but can be replaced painlessly.
The drivers window does have a bit of trouble rolling up, and rolls down slow. Real dirty though, so that could be it. (power windows)
Doesn't have power steering.
5-Speed.
12 A.
He's asking $700 for it, but might be convinced to go a bit lower.
Is this car worth $700?
It does have a 12 of Sapporo and a box of 'special' magazines in the back. I can drink the beer and sell the magazines to kids if nothing else
Thanks for your time

Also, any advice on towing the poor thing? The brakes didn't seem to work at all, and the E-Brake hardly had enough stopping power. Should we just use a flatbed?

What really matters, Jay, is what YOU think about it... I'm sure a lot of people would think I was crazy to buy an '84 with 207k miles (though Rotary Performance rebuilt the engine around 40k miles ago before I bought it) for $1500... but you know what? I'm happy. Yeah, the outside is is really good shape with a new same color as stock paint job, and the interior has been completely redone and all the electronics work and the A/C has been converted to 134a and it works nice and cool (most of the time), and the engine runs real strong... but there's still people that would NEVER pay that much for a car with all the minor things that need to be done. They're minor in MY opinion though. Some people may think that needing shocks/cartridges all the way around is a major thing, but not me. (yeah, there's other stuff, but still.)
But the point is, I'm TOTALLY happy with my RX-7 and I don't care of people think I got a steal, or if I got totally ripped off. What matters is what I think about MY car... and for you, what matters is what YOU think of the deal YOU got and is it worth it to YOU.
I will say this though... I don't blame you for asking, because I still ask for opinions about damn near everything... I still make the final decision though!
And as far as being a "post *****", well, look at the bottom of my thing there on the left and see how many posts I have... just remember that's since, oh, the first week of this month I believe.

Yeah, I ask advice, but usually go with what I was thinking anyway. I'd love to find an RX like this for $100, Hades. Around where I live, it's just not possible. These things are rare as gems around here.
As a matter of fact, we only have one shop that's dedicated to RX 7s! They were putting a 13A Turbo in a beautiful first gen today, by the way. Man, that thing was SWEET.

$700 for what you decribed is a some what high, a "bit" less might be a little high as well. you obviously are committed to getting an RX7 and given the available situtaion in your area $500 to $600 wouldn't be a bad deal. after re-reading you post theres a lot good stuff on that car, plus beer and mags. really! $20 for a fender, $5.00 for the door thing, $30.00 for a carb rebuild kit. those are prices at the local pull-a-part junk yard.

So, supposing I don't have to rebuild the motor (crosses fingers)
it would cost me about $30 to bring her back to life? I paid him $600, but he said he'll front me back $100 if the motor's shot. Could I rebuild that motor for $100?
I'm sorry, I'm just an idiot to the car world
I do have a Haynes book with step by step carb and motor rebuild instructions (with pictures even!) though.
Is it WORTH it to rebuild the motor if need be? Would it run like new such as when you rebuild a piston engine?
Or, should I pay the RX store $500 to rebuild it with a street port? That's the price they gave me, anyway. I don't know if they're charging too much though.
Thanks again.

Why did I get an email that this post had been replied to?!
Ended up getting $300 back, making the purchase $300. I've easily spent that and then some back on it, lol

I managed to do my 1/2BP and rebuild on about $200...cuz i went with a bunch of new interiors...just to be safe...cuz i spent all that time on my porting and such...and as far as if its worth it...HELL YA!!!
I dont know much about the rotary shop that would port and rebuild your engine for $500...but that seems like a helluva deal...depending on the type of shop it is...they might just use all of your old interiors...which is BAD...and the engine will not last long...which is why i suggest you do it yourself...plus...then you can learn a helluva lot just by pullin one of these bad boys apart ....i know that i did.
Anyways...good luck with whatever you do...ill be a short PM away if you need some help on anything jay!

I'm the pro at this kind of thing
Yeah, I've already got the sevenstock trip planned out.
Last year, I got to sit in Lordsburg NM, with the car having not QUITE made it to Sevenstock , waiting for it to be towed back home. SO CLOSE, yet SO FAR AWAY!
