1980 Tachometer bouncing, and engine misfiring/shutting off.

My tachometer clicks and jumps sometimes when I am at any rpm other than idle it also misfires the more severe the jump is.

I am thinking coils, alt voltage regulator choke/check relay, ignition switch, or distributor.

If anyone has any idea what it might be or could point me in a good direction to start testing things I would appreciate it!!

Here is a video of it happening

welcome to the board.

i would start by looking closely at the ignition system - particularly the trailing ignitor and/or whatever consumables it has (whatever it's equivalent of a rotor or points is). unfortunately, i'm not that familiar with the system on the '80 apart from knowing it's different from the '79 points and the 1981-85 electronic system.

start by getting a copy of the FSM: Foxed.ca

maybe this thread will get you started: https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-gene...spark-1139758/

The 1980 uses a one year only electronic ignition that has the ignitor box on the driver's side struct tower. That box is very hard to find a replacement for. You'll need to examine that system and ensure the tach signal coming from the coil is good.

Idk what it is, but mine does something very similar, and yet it looks different. At any speed other than idle (around 1300 rpm to be more exact) the tach starts bouncing rapidly, with a clicking that clicks every time it bounces. The bouncing is also rhythmic, so the tach never really goes up past the 2000rpm threshold, and it also speeds up as the rpm goes up. The car also makes popping sounds as is decelerates after a hard acceleration and then doesn't run as well for a little bit or even stalls before going back to normal. But your problem sounds so similar that I was hoping you found your solution, so I could maybe try testing it myself. Right now the only thought we have is the igniter as the coils look ok
