1980 just sitting...

There's a completely stock, ORIGINAL, 1980 GS sitting up the street from my house, here in New Orleans.

It's silver, and black interior. I went and called the owner, and he said it's not for sale. I asked him what it would take to get it...

He said, "It needs a new clutch. I'd feel guilty as hell if I sld a car to someone while knowing it didn't run right. Plus, it hasn't ran in 2 years."

I said, "If I can get it started, will you consider selling it to me?"

He said, " not with a bad clutch."

I went up the street to autozone, bought a bottle of MMO, poured some down the stock Nikki, hooked up the jumper cables... rowr, rowr, rowr... IGNITION! Had the typical plume of smoke, but it went away quickly... sounded STRONG. But... I think it might be burning some oil... it had a bluish tint to the exhaust. The guy drove it around the block, and then parked it right back where it was. I asked him if he changed his mind, and he said, "Show me you have a clutch to put in it, and we'll talk."

HOPEFULLY.... I just scored on a killer deal of a car. Then I can have another money pit! I love it!

And if he changes his mind after you've put the clutch in, he'll probably refund you the money for the clutch kit.

What if he is just trying to get some free labor out of you? j/k

I don't see why he won't just sell it to you. You will be buying it knowing that it has problems. Good luck.

I bought an '85 in a simalar situation.

I knew it had been sitting two years, phoned the owner. They told me it had a bad cluch, They sold it to me for $600, put a new master cylinder in, and drove it like I stole it for two years, and sold it after I bought my '84

The oil smoke could just be from the fact that it sat for two years.

Why would he expect you to buy a clutch for a car you don't own...this seems a bit wierd....I can understand not wanting to sell a car but if he IS willing to sell why is he putting all these stipulations on it?....offer him some cash see what he says.....just smells like tuna to me....

I've seen it too mang, and from what you've already told me the guy sounds like a fruit. I wouldn't hold out too much hope of getting the car.

Did you tell him you have another car? Explain to him that you're a rotorhead, and you can get a clutch for these car's easily.

I don't know why the guy would freak out about selling a car with a bad clutch. But, I had a similar situation where I could have bought an 83 LE. I knew the kid had alot of aftermarket stuff in there. RB intake, exhaust, etc. His body had the rear wheel well rot, and the passenger side suspension broke loose. He only wanted $100.00 for the car, which was well worth that in parts alone.

His dad wouldn't sell the car to me, even knowing I would part it out, because of the damage.

Maybe he's just trying to protect his *** out of some unforeseen accident involving the clutch...who knows?

Anyways, just go to Autozone, or get a Victoria British catalog showing available clutches. Bring him something saying you have access to a clutch, and then offer him $100 less for giving you the run around.

I would probably use the clutch, PP, and flywheel from my car.
