1980 direct fire again
still trying to get help setting up a 2nd generation direct fire setup on my 1980. I have figured out that one of the connectors to my leading coil is for the tach. I'm assuming the other connector is the negative ground for the tach. This leaves an interesting situation. It seems both ground wires for the ignitors are wired to the negative terminal to the leading coil.
Will someone please help me with this setup.
I am like 0 for 5 with threads regarding help in this area. Is it my breath? Do I smell bad?
It's not my fault I like my 1980 but need some help.

sold the FD...kept the FB
the tach should go to the negative side of the Trailing coil
and as far as the "grounds" go.. the negative is what triggers the spark... what ever you do, don't ground the "-" side of the coil to the chassis...it will never fire. They fire everytime ground is taken away..
there should be two heavy gauge wires and two smaller gauge wires...the heavy ones go to the "+" and the smaller ones are for the "-"

I thought that on '79-'80 model Rx-7 had a trailing ignition that did not fire all the time, hense why mazda put the tach on the leading distributor on those model cars.
What does it matter if it on the leading side anyways, I ran my Autometer Monster tach on the leading coil and my stock '83 tach was left on the trailing coil.
That way in the middle of a race if I got a miss in the ignition, I could determine which ignition systems has having the problem.
In warm up I had a leading ignitor crapped out, came in to the hot pits, jumped out of the car and replaced the ignitor in a manner of a few minutes.
Suggestion, always have a small supply bag with your crew chief when racing. And know where your crew chief is going to be. It cost a lot of money for track time and you don't want to go back paddock and lose out.
