? 1980 Alt.?

ok i know the 79 had a external voltage reg... does a 80? a friend needs a new alt. he over tightened the belt and the bearing is FRIED. if its a internal reg. then ill slap on a extra 83 alt i have if not i guess weell have to find a 80.

Mine was not externally regulated...it's a Colorado '80 that was originally an auto tranny car...

My '80 also had internal regulator. Later alternators are a direct swap.

i never swapped my alternator, so i am running an 80 in my 79. is this going to cause any problems (like the car not shuting off with the key).

should i through on the 79 instead

The 80 has an internal regulator. I would guess that you are going to have to do some wiring removal and possibly some rewiring. You are going to replace the external regulator with an internal. I would take a look at the wiring diagram for more info.
If you are going to all that trouble I think that I would find a used second gen alt and install that, it is a good upgrade.

well my goal is to swap something in that willnot give me trouble, but i will look into the possibility of a second gen one. how involved is that swap?

Can't believe I missed this...it's as easy as this once you've switched the car's wiring to an internally regulated alt set-up...


that 'ol alt conversion diagram again!!

I'm getting some serious mileage outta that one!
