Angry 1979 Mazda Rx-7

Okay, There's a '79 RX-7 in town. It's got 135,000 miles on it. The car is beatiful, its got a new clutch, paint, stereo, good tires, the works...one problem. Its got leaky side seals. I really want this car...what do i do? Also, How much would it run me to put a 13b into this car, its currently got a stock 12A. How much do new side seals run?

You can't just pull the engine down, slap new side seals in, put it back together and expect it to last. If the side seals are gone it's most probably gonna need a full rebuild anyway.

Uh, give it to me.

(13B in an SA? Sacrilege!)

Side seals are really easy to fix. Just pop the engine out, tear it down, put your new ones in, clearance 'em, and put it back together.

Bah... It only takes a few hours to yank the engine and tear it down if you have proper tools. If you miss something, tear it down again... although that could get expensive, as coolant O-rings can't generally be re-used.

'79 RX-7

i have a friend with a 13b that has good compression. if i can get the engine for a couple hundred $$ wouldn't it be cheaper to just put the 13b in the first gen? How fast are street ported 12A's?

13B's arent much faster than 12A's. I'd take a nice ported 12A with decent carbs over a stock FI 13B any day.

Be nice Rxcetera, or I'll have to smack you w/my 13b FI.

Only kidding. From what I hear 12a 4 ports Streetported engines are better to work with.

13B's own for torque... torque up high, torque down low, torque everywhere.

12A's make a lil' less, of course, and a 12A can be built up right up there with how much power a 13B can make, but the torque curve tends to be higher up and narrower. My SP actually makes more torque down low than stock, but the torque doesn't peak until 5500 or so, and if I wasn't running such a restrictive carb it'd pull all the way to... well, stock apex seals = max 8500. Kind of a narrow powerband.

Some of us *like* that, though
