13bt swap under way
hey me and my friend are going to start doin the install on the 89 13bt next weekend. i was just wondering what else has to be done to make the swap work, like what ecu do i need, how do i make the car get electronic fuel injection, do i need a new fuel pump and what else. i am looking for an affordable way of picking up these things so i will probably get them from a junk yard or on thepartstrader.com. do i need a stand alone ecu for this setup, or can that wait till i upgrade the turbo. also, i never thought about this because iwas so excited, but my 79 is a 4 speed manual, what problems does this present when running the 13bt. will the engine still work just without a fifth gear or will it just not work until i swap the tranny. thanks

Do a search for 13bt swap on here, also check posts under my username there is a ton of info on it..
The first time you use the engine really good, you will probally be changing the trans
The main things are front cover from a 12a to make it mount in the FB's location. OMP and lines from a 12A or GSL SE, if you are going with EFI you will need a way to control it. Hope you are well versed in wiring and reading diagrams. Or go with a Haltec EK6 (1200 bucks), also with EFI you WILL need to upgrade the fuel pump do to the need for a higher PSI on the fuel system an EFI system needs. Also you need the coil packs from a 2nd gen and wire them in Theres a really good swap page on this forum, under my username

that sound slike one hell of a job! Mike is right.... you will need something to control the engine w/ like the original computer , but then you need the whole engine harness from the 89 turbo. I would also guess you would blow up the trans w/ the new power from the turbo motor. I would think your best shot w/ fitment would be a GSL-SE trans and that would eventually blow up too! The turbo trans was built w/ the strength to handle the turbo motor, but I doubt it would fit in a gen 1. Try and get as much stuff from the 89 as you can and swap it into the gen 1 (fuel pump, ignition system, ecu . ect.....)

Wow a 4-speed... I've heard about them but everyone told me they were like the 2-spoke steering wheels - theoretically available but seldom if ever seen. Cool!

Put it this way... people complain about having to modify a T2 trans to fit in an FB because the shifter sits back too far and you have to cut the floor. Well you have to do the same thing just to fit an FB trans in an SA - the SA shiter is much further forward and to put an FB or a T2 trans in will involve cutting apart ot removing large portions of the floor, center console, and ashtray/armrest. (Ashtray *behind* the shifter on SA's, not under the radio)
