rattles etc.
Have an 84 rs had the rear wheel bearings changed but still have a ratlle noise from the back increases more when I deaccelerate. Not always steady but does increase with speed. Was told it could be the differential carrier bearings. Need a little info on whats involved if it is those or if someone has another idea let me know? My local mechanic said that the fluid in the rear end was pitch black when he changed it. Its been doing this same noise since I got the car some 15k miles ago.

Need mo' info...
Buckaroo...
You're gonna have to give us a bit more detail....This rattle noise, is it there on acceleration, or only on decelerration? Can you feel it in the car, or is it just a noise? 'Course the rear-end oil was black...Whadda yuh expect from a 18 year old car? Rear-end oil is kinda dark to begin with ennaways....Rattles usually suggest wornout bushings, shocks, or exhaust. Put 'er up on stands and start 'er up. Carefully, run the gears, is that rattle there? If so, comin' from where? If I had to, I'd bet on a driveshaft univeral goin' rather than carrier bearings.
Is this a new noise, or has it been there for a time? Is it gettin' worse, or does it stay the same? What speed does this rattle appear at?
Get back to us,
Denny, from the 'ol corncrib....

noises
Had the nosie since I got the car at least 15k miles. I don't notice it as much on accleration but whenI let off the gas I hear a nosie that sounds like and uneven knock in the rwear end maybe drive shaft. When I put it on stands and run it I don't hear the noise. So times when I am comung up to a stop and push the clutch in and shift gears i will hear a clunk in the back. Hard to describe nosies. Just how tight do the ujoints have to be? Can there be any movement at all?

u-joint mostlikely. pull out the driveshaft. ck for play in the front and rear u-joint. if it doesnt move freely, then u can say good bye to it. not replaceable either but if u can find a machine shop who will take thier time grinding the clips, then its possible. otherwise, i think its $300 from mazdatrix. otherwise, ck ur local junkyards. thats what i have been doing. got 3 spares in my garage for my car.
