12aT or 13bT in a fb?

Ok... Here's the deal.... I have two choices right now on what I can do to my car... I was given a turbo & manifold (a stock turbo from the turbo II) and other random parts needed... we still have to get a carb set up and a few other things, but that can be done fairly easy. My Bf is pretty crafty and getting to be pretty good with a welder and what we have been working our way towards is making a turbo set up for one of the 12a's that we have at our house... BUT (and there’s always a but)... The kid around the block from us is selling a j-spec 13bt and tranny for 700... he bought the engine and never put it in the car.... basically he has to get rid of everything that he has. So ofcorse seeing a good price like that we begin to think.... 13bt instead of making our 12a turbo? We do understand the amount of work and effort it will take to put the 13bt in there and all the changes and custom rigging we will have to do... but another cool thing I was also given was the wiring harness & ecu from a turbo II (one of my good friends is going standalone in his turbo II and has all this stuff just lying around now) soooo, one of the hardest parts is already covered. This has been our conversation for the past 3 days... everytime we decied to do one or the other we change our minds completly and are just stuck in a creative block (lol). I need some opinions on this besides my boyfriends...

Thanks alot guys

Jessica

Hmm. I'd go 12aT. I think it would be a little simpler and still lots of fun. Just a personal preference though. I imagine you'd get more ponies out of the 13b. Really depends how committed you are to the project I guess.

Get the TII motor harness and ECU. You can't go wrong with that and you won't regret it. If you do the 12AT you're gonna want to upgrade to a 13B later.

I say Turbo your 12A, using a sidedraft carb. Also Buy the 13BT from the other guy. When you blow the 12A, the 13B will also work with the carb, Turbo etc, with minimal fuss. Forget about the stock ECU, that only gives you stock power. You NEED at least 300 rwhp in a 1st gen. That's when it starts to get really fun.

Im with df on this one. but Im more toward just putting the turbo on the 12a but a carbed 13b would be nice too. The 12a would be much eaisier I believe and give you a nice learning base from which to put that 13bt in.

Dedication is not the issues... trust me... we have had this car for about 4 years and were on our 3rd engine.... we are fully committed to doing what it takes to make this car what we want it to be.... but I really don’t want anything to crazy.... I'm still learning my self... my bf is much more inclined then I am and could handle all that... but this car is basically what I am learning on.... would I like to have 300rwhp of coarse... is it needed? No not just yet, I don’t want to kill my self

if you can get that TII engine and tranny for 500 , i say jump on it.

im 80% done with my 12aT setup and only the plumbing and exhaust are left. i didn't got 13bt, because i dont have the resorces to do a motor transplant. plus i have bad luck and if it can go wrong it will go wrong for me.!!!!

i am using the sidedraft setup also. i plan to make 200 hp with the 12at setup and 300 w/ NO2 at the strip.

carl.

well if your planning on squeezing 100 shot, plan on rebuilding your motor!!
unless the motor is a freshly rebuilt streetport with good apex seals and you really know how to tune n2o~~

i agree fully with robert.
might as well blow your motor up some other fun way. and n20 tuning is not someting you can expiriment on. its way less forgiving than say...raising the boost.

For the swap question. I would say you are wasting money if you do the 12at swap.

itll cost the same to just go 13bt and youll have gobs more power and torque.

the stock 13bt with a carbed turbo and a upgraded stock turbo will make at LEAST 250WHP

I like directfreaks idea... start off with turboing your 12a with a stock T2 turbo and get used to a powerful car and when you blow that up put the T2 engine and trans in it.
