12A with the wrong plugs....Now what do I do.

1st off I've always been a Datsun Z car nut so this is my 1st RX7 and the 1st rotory engine I've worked with. The car had these plugs in it when I got it and I'm trying to get it running again. The problem is who ever put plugs in it last used the wrong plug. to be honest I don't know how the hell they got these in there. The metal part of the plug in down below the "eyebrow" around the plug hole. There is nothing to get a hold of to get it out. The ceramic part of the plug has broken off leaving the metal part flush with the rotor housing. So my question is now what the hell do I do. I don't want to grind off the eyebrow aroung the hole, can't drill and easy out it. Am I going to have to pull the engine and pull it apart to get this out? If so then I may have an '85 RX 7 for sale..................

Some plug styles require a thinwall sparkplug socket. Is the hex part of the plug still there?

RB sales a thin wall socket for those plugs. Not sure about how to get them out without one.

i had the exact same thing when i got my car... dont worry you can get them out... just buy a cheap spark plug socket from sears and then grind down the outer edge enough so it goes onto the plug, theres enough backing that you can fit it further in than before.. enjoy...

Some of the older style NGKs require the thinwall socket. A frind of mine bought a set of 4 for 5 bucks on eBay, I had to grind down one of my sockets to install them.

I had the exact same thing with one of mine.

Ground a cheapy down, worked allright, and was much cheaper than the thin wall socket off RB.

I feel your pain, had the same thing happen to me twice......The first time I ground off the metal lip with a dremel. The second time I bought a cheap-o wrench and ground it down real thin to slide in there, and with alot of PB penetrating oil got it out.........Good luck either way is a pain in the butt.

Welcome to the forum. I too am a converted Zcar guy. I still love the old Datsuns, but these cars have a magic all their own.

Datsun actually gave up on the performance aspect of the Z cars and started making them "luxury boulevard cruisers" due to the competition presented by the RX7 and Scirroco. I've owned four Zs in the past, with the last one being a beautiful '73 that I restored. I'm sure that you'll be pleased with your new car. After all, who was winning all of the races in the early '80s?

Thanks everyone, at least I'm not the only one who has seen this. Think I'll dig out the bench grinder and have at a "made in China" socket. Hope I can get it down far enough, looks like the points of the plug are just about touching the eyebrow around it. Still ALOT better than a rebuild or selling it. I got this car so I wouldn't have to drive my 280Z everyday. I built the Z BEFORE gas went to almost $3 a gallon. The Z likes premium or race fuel, the 7 will run on any grade and is still pretty quick...............BTW anyone have a good fuel pump and combnation switch(no cruise) for an '85?

I've got a stock pump from an '85 if you need it (just pm me). However, if you plan on doing any sort of mods in the future then you might want to consider an upgrade at this time. The stock fuel pump is barely adequate for the car when stock.

Check out this link for details on the upgrade. https://www.rx7club.com//showthread.php?t=529605
