12a turbo... timing issue?

ok, so my turbo setup is done and i'm boosting. yea, it's awesome, but here's the catch. i keep the boost at 6psi cause that's all i can get in without sputter and ****. i know it's a timing issue for the most part. dizzy is locked, and the only way i make full boost is with the distributor set to full advance from the stock tooth setting. crazy i know, but that's the only way, if i retard it i cant even make 2psi without breakup and crazy hesitation. any ideas?

are you using a timing light? since you didnt say what your time was actually set at im assuming you need to GET ONE!!!!!

If you are then try taking the dizzy out and sliding it back in with the gear moved one tooth. cant remember wich way to turn it.

IF you locked it at full mechanical advance- and you have the distrubuter at the stock position, that should be a good starting point. You don't need to stray much from that position. Retarding it will cause it to hestiate, or knock and detinate if you go too far the other way- WATCH out!

So locked full advanced and at the stock position you have problems? You never said where you locked it?

dizzy is locked. started off at stock setting with the screw in the middle but it wont make boost at all, just sputters it's *** off. will make boost very happily till about 7psi or anything over 6,000rpms with the screw hitting the right side of the dizzy slide area thing. haha, i'll post a pic

Make sure your leading coil is good by checking resistance. IF they are weak, it will definitely hestitate, try swapping the leading and trailing coils around. Make sure your fuel pressure is correct for base pressure.

Also, if you are using boost, hope you are not using the stock 12a plugs, they will get too hot and porcelin will break off into the engine(me knows this unfortunately). I use stock FC TII plugs combination with good success.

At 3 PSI you're having problems?

Are you *sure* you have enough fuel/jetting?

What is you timing set at??? It does not matter where you locked the distributor, it matters when the distributor lights off the spark plug.

So, what is the timing set at?? You should be at about 15 deg. untill you start to crest 15psi. That will be safe until you can begin to tune your setup.

HEY, ok ok sorry i havent responded in a few days on this thread. you guys all have great possibilities. here's what the deal is right now. i'll give you thewhole low down. i can't take it anymore hahaha, gotta get this **** working. anywho; the carb:

50 sk dco side draft. yes, fuggin big i know but will work fine... actually it should make rediculous top end
-air bleeds - 220
-emulsion tube - sk 44???? wtf i dunno either
-jets - 240's that have been drilled out i know i know. but i'm using them for now to be safe. i tried 180's like most people have and it won't do jack ****

ok, TIMING: (dizzy is locked)

i do have a timing light. i will set timing to STOCK and it WILL NOT BOOST AT ALL! as soon as it starts to spool it sputters like a ****, but NO KNOCKING. and yes i know what knocking on a rotary sounds like... you cant fuggin miss it hahaha. (we have a turbo 6port we're tuning as well, was knocking a good bit at high boost lol) anyways; if i turn the distributor all the way clockwise (full advance as far as i know) and it will drive VERY smoothly and boost very happily but only up till about 5500 rpms and no more than 6psi.

idle is always lumpy and crap unless the dizzy is turned to full retard. then it idles beautifully BUT will not drive for ****... boost or no.

now, the coils are fairly new msd blaster 2's. i know for a fact i'm getting spark to all plugs and i'm not running stock 12a plugs. i've tried many different ones now. currently in the motor are B9ES's gapped to .015 as per Robert at rotaryshack. I am running a brand new cap and rotor as of two days ago... nothing changed.

waiting on :

-air bleed - 160
-emulsion tube - F16
- jets - 230's or so.

any ideas? if feels like it's gonna be very strong. once it hits 6psi the damn thing gets down good, i can only imagine 12!!!! ahhhhh, thanks for the help thus far tho guys. keep giving me ideas

Sounds like timing is fine, but it is leaning out up high. Smaller air bleeds will fix that...Or a new carb
