12a turbo info
ok any info on the STOCK 12a turbo (not in the us ) im working on doing a low maint. good power upgrade. Im still thinking about a 13bt but want to be a bit diffrent. So i need more info on the 12a turbo setup. i know they are 165 hp, and have 2 injectors. i can get the whole thing motor, wiring, ecu, tranny blah blah blah shipped to me from aust. for about 1300 us $. that isnt the most power but its good strong stock power and very low tuning. id basiclly want to not have to **** with it.
is the stock 12at the same over all size as a stock 12a...from front cover to tranny end? will a stock drive shaft slide into a 12at tranny? this is the kinda info im looking for.

Call Nick and talk to him. You know who I am talking about.
Then call Don at Hayes. They used to import them.
I know the ports are bigger. And that the FI ones had 2 850 injectors.

Personally I wouldn't bother... they're non intercooled, which is enough reason to stay away... plus they have analog computers and knock control is very very crude: Mazda found that knock typically only happened in a certain RPM range under certain conditions, so they run the fuel a little richer then. But they do have special distributors with boost retard, that lots of people really look for.
If you do get one, definitely get an intercooler, a larger turbo (the stock one runs out of breath very early in the RPM range, it's tiny!), and aftermarket fuel system, At that point you might as well get an FC turbo engine with its better apex seals and better stock fuel management.

fro $1300 US why not just bolt on an aftermarket FI on a mildly ported motor? You would get same(more?) power and still have the reliability over the stock analog FI.
Just my $.02

g'day
I had a 12a turbo in my s2 ('82 1st gen) rx-7.
I added a front mount intercooler form a 2nd gen and the compressor wheel was also updated to one from a 2nd gen....
It put out 185 rwHP @12PSI on the dyno with the std compressor wheel, and put out a guesstemated 210rwHp with the 13bT compressor wheel..
check out the car on my humble homepage

thanks revhed for the backup....
the ports on these engine are tiny!!!!!! so you really are pussing to force the air though.......
also with the 12aT comperssor wheel the boost waent holding @12 psi it would peak then drop off....
with the 13bT compressor wheel it held the boos fine.. to the point were the 800cc injectors were on full duty cycle
as i said i didnt dyno the car after fitting the 13bt wheel . but it made a HUGE difference

Jim Linnihan imported a TII front clip with ECU and tranny for about the same cost.
jlinnihan@mn.rr.com
More power, more potential, bigger turbo, etc... You might contact him for info about what the end price was to his doorstep.

BadAss - Build a non import 12A turbo engine, do not use the import ones. The only good thing that came off the imports were the injectors and the boost retard dizzys. BUT! If you want something that goes okay and has decent fuel economy, I guess the import 12AT would be fine. Yes the gearbox etc would bolt straight up without problems.

That's a little optimistic. Most 12A street ports are lucky to make more than that at the flywheel.

When our 1980 RX-7 used to be streetable it was a 12-A turbo with 410 RWHP (Holley and Turbo and pump gasoline) on a 3rd gen tranny it was running 10:7's constantly. So these engines are very good and the apex seals are stronger and thicker.

I got my cosmo motor complete for a little more than that... Its gonna be a bitch getting it on and figureing out how many vacuum hoses I can cap off... If I dont figure out this twin steup, im gonna have to go single (and thats a shitload of money I didnt count on spending). Do like I should have done, buy a 89-91 13bt
