12a tranny to 86+ 13b
Well I'm currious if my starter motor will work on the engine.
I have a 12a 5spd tranny hooked up to a 86 13b block.
The starter is from an 89 motor.
It seems to bolt up fine... but I havent tried it yet.
Will this combo work or will I need an FB starter?

Try it and find out!
There are two different 1st-gen starters, one with an 8-tooth gear and one with an 11-tooth gear. Since the flywheel diameters and starter cases are identical, the difference must be in the transmission case. FWIW my '80 had an 8-tooth, my '85 has an 11-tooth, and I don't know which year brought the change.

I think it may work. My friend's 87 GXL's starter screwed up, and I gave him the one from my GSL-SE, and it worked. (I have a TII starter now)
Then again, they were both 13B's with the larger flywheels than the 12A cars...

Yes it would.
The T2 flywheel won't fit in the N/A bellhousing, though. You'd need to get an N/A flywheel for it (use stock flywheel from same year, or get a N/A lightweight flywheel).
Make sure to have a good stock of transmissions on hand. The N/A RX-7 trannies are fairly weak, especially the later ones which have bearing problems and fine-pitch gears.
