12a replaced by 13b

Ok

Has anybody done a conversion from a 12a to a 13b. What does it envolve. Can all peripherals remain from the original 12a. I know that racing beat sells a motor mount that enables the 13b to be placed but whay else is needed. How about my headers (12a) will they fit on the 13b.

G'day.

This topic has been covered EXTENSIVELY on this forum. Your questions can be answered with a simple search. Please allow me to draw your attention to two "stickies" at the top of the 1st gen section's main page. The sticky
"ATTN: new members, read here first before posting" you should give a read, as well as the one about the TII swap.

TII is a 13b turbo engine out of a second gen TII car. This swap is a little more involved than a simple 13b to 12a swap, but alot of the info is relevant.

Some questions that you should ask yourself about the conversion are:
1. Where are you getting the 13b? Not all 13b's are the same, though all have their charms. You can rebuild a 13b from an Rx4 and pop it in, or you can grab one out of an '85 GSL-SE, or a Second Gen. They're all slightly different, and require slight changes to how you install them.
2. How much money do you have to spend on this conversion?
3. What kind of driving are you doing? This will help determine any porting or changes you want to do while making the swap.
4. How much time do you have, or how willing are you to get your hands dirty learning about this? Do you know of any local rotary shops? any of them would be able to do this conversion, but it would be a little pricier than doing it yourself if you have experience with cars.

And no, the headers will not fit. If you go for a 13b with Fuel Injection, the wiring will be a bitch, but it can be done. If you take a Fuel Injected 13b and try to remove the FI in favour of carb, it too can be done. If you use an old 13b from like an Rx4, you'll probably want to rebuild it (or get it rebuilt).

Have fun with the project if you decide to take it on. Many people on here have done many different configurations of 13b's in 1st gen cars. You won't be at a lack of info for sure

I'm amazed that someone hasn't written up a how-to about that wiring. If it's such a nightmare, you'd think that someone who has finished the swap would be able to do a how-to....

Then again, once you get it running, you almost hate to take it apart again!

this is rediculous, no one covers enough of the wiring swap to make ANY sense, let alone apply it to my project (13b into an '83 GSL). The best I found was Pauls site (http://my7.rx-7.org/Paul/index.htm), but even he only has a few pictures, but nothing about where stuff goes.... MAN im frustrated

Sometime in calendar year 2004 when I finally have time, I'm doing the swap. I'll have my new camera by then and will strongly consider doing such a tutorial.

Just go carb its soo much easier and runs a lot better with less tuning to get it right. But of course you can get the piggy back and junk for your ecu or a stand alone and you will get more power.. BUT is all the wiring worth it, when you can just strap on a carb and it will spank the F.I. right out of the box? I have done the swap with the racing beat carb. Its a breeze. real easy to do.

yeah well, thats great for someone that can AFFORD IT... obviously if i had money i would be putting a TII in this thing instead of an NA... but i am forced to work with what I have, and a fuel injected wiring nightmare is all I have to work with.
